Moving reflections from Rafael Pástor on his fellowship journey. Applications for our next cohort are open until November 8! Learn more and apply now at: https://lnkd.in/g7bcrEju
Reflections from the Global South: A Journey of Connection, Resilience, and Gratitude As I look back on my time in the Yale Emerging Climate Leaders Fellowship, I’m overwhelmed by the privilege of having met some of the most inspiring individuals from across the Global South. It’s remarkable how, despite the distances, we all share so much—our challenges, our incredible resilience, and our deep connection to nature. These “coincidences” of the Global South have shown me that even in the face of adversity, our shared connection to the land binds us. And now, with COP16 taking place in Colombia, it’s a reminder of the immense responsibility we carry. The role we play in addressing climate challenges is critical, but so is the hope we cultivate through collective action. To my friends from the fellowship, you’ve left an indelible mark on my journey, and for that, I’m deeply grateful. For those interested, I recently shared more on these reflections in the Yale Daily News. I hope it inspires others to understand how experiences like this fellowship can truly change your perspective—and highlight the work and challenges that lie ahead for all of us. Artificial intelligence (#AI) has been the undisputed buzzword of 2024, but we are only beginning to grapple with its potential to transform entire industries - and societies. Much like #climate change, responsible AI governance is one of the defining collective challenges of the 21st century, a complex task transcending borders and disciplines. And as with climate change, alongside unprecedented risk come vast new opportunities. How can we leverage AI to supercharge the green transition? Artificial intelligence is already helping track and trace pollution, predict climate disasters, and map deforestation. Where can AI enable incremental gains, facilitating things we are already doing— and where can it help us unlock breakthrough science? The potential for impact is extraordinary — if we break down the silos between the AI, nature and climate communities. How can we build collaborations across climate, nature and AI to reduce emissions, enhance #resilience, and protect #nature at the necessary speed and scale? And how can we overcome hurdles around #data and #trust in the deployment of AI, and put the users at the center, empowering citizens and communities as they leverage the technology? Our very own Constanza Gomez Mont (YCF 2024), Charlotte Wang (YWF 2024) and Siddharth Sinha (YCF 2024) explored these questions in a panel yesterday moderated by Yuval Ben-David as part of Yale @ #ClimateWeekNYC. With experience applying AI across mitigation, adaptation and biodiversity solutions in diverse global contexts, our panelists inspired with their clear-headed optimism about the promise of new technology while engaging frankly with the ethical, social and political implications of AI x Climate solutions. The 2024 program of our Yale Emerging Climate Leaders Fellowship has come to a close. The 16 extraordinary Yale Climate Fellows came together in Paris last week to exchange views with top global experts and decision-makers — including from the International Energy Agency (IEA), European Commission, UNESCO and Breakthrough Energy — and to continue pursuing emerging collaborations that cut across geographies and disciplines to accelerate the green transition. From New Haven to Paris to Brussels, it has been a joy to watch this group inspiring and supporting each other, and cross-pollinating ideas that are taking shape into substantive initiatives such as Nature-Based Discussions - a podcast series about nature-based solutions - and a policy playbook for Global South cities tackling similar issues such as extreme heat and air quality. To our rising leaders — Asghar Leghari, Manja Kargbo, Siddharth Sinha, Shalu Agrawal, Luana Gaspar, Gilberto Ribeiro de Oliveira Filho, Rafael Pástor, Iman Ustadi, Constanza Gomez Mont, Adedoyin Pearse, Lorraine Njue, FIA, Mluleki Shongwe, Hu Jacky, Zhouwei Diao, Satrio A. Wicaksono and Tiza Mafira, may you continue rising together, and reach for the stars!

We were honored to meet with International Energy Agency (IEA) Executive Director Fatih Birol yesterday in Paris. The 2024 Yale Climate Fellows briefed him on their innovative and interdisciplinary work across clean #energy, climate #adaptation and #nature-based solutions, and discussed with Dr. Birol the unique challenges - and opportunities - for emerging and developing economies in navigating the green transition. Thanks to Dr. Birol for a dynamic conversation that touched on the centrality of #cities (responsible for nearly 80% of global emissions) to the energy transition; how to harness #AI for energy while contending with the soaring energy demands of AI; and the indispensable role of climate #finance in moving from ambition to implementation.

This week in Paris, and the entire Yale Emerging Climate Leaders Fellowship, has been breathtaking—both figuratively and literally as we have had the Eiffel Tower as the backdrop to many of our meetings. The intersectionality nature of the design of this program has put our brain cells to work 😅 From having discussions on the true meaning of a #JustEnergyTransition from our Global South perspective and the tensions surrounding it, to debating the balance between global #standardization in #decarbonization strategies & the need to adapt to local realities, #Green comparative #advantages, climate as a #security agenda, how carbon adjustment mechanisms (#CBAM) are being designed to shift incentives for #decarbonization in #globaltrade, greening of #ParisOlympics2024.. and so much more. Learning and debating with topic experts and peers, questioning current development narratives, and sharing our diverse perspectives as a cohort of 16 fellows in intimate meetings undeniably enrich our approaches and sharpen our impact... -- in my case, the work I lead with my team and partners through C Minds ' & NaturaTech LAC on #RegnerativeJustEconomicTransitions, #AI for #Climate and #Biodiversity #Transboundary and #systemic innovation #strategies. For those passionate about these topics, check out the work of these talented minds we had the pleasure to spend time with: 👉 Electric Mobility: Elizabeth Connelly, Ph.D. 👉 People-Centered Transitions: Brian Motherway Jane Cohen 👉 Green Olympics: Yann Krysinski 👉 Carbon Markets: Luca Lo Re International Energy Agency (IEA) #OECD 👉 Deep tech Innovation for energy: Mariano Berkenwald Breakthrough Energy 👉 Social Justice and the Environment: Lucas Chancel 👉 Energy (G20, EU, IEA): Sylvia Elisabeth Beyer Mechthild Wörsdörfer Isaac Valero Bruegel - Improving economic policy Melanie Slade 👉 Carbon Adjustment Mechanisms: @Vincent Hurtoday Roa 👉 Climate and Defense: Julia Tasse 👉 Air quality: Martina Otto #UNEP #AI ethics for Climate: Gabriela Ramos Dafna Feinholz Eleonora Lamm Irakli Khodeli (I am particularly proud to have been working very close to them, coauthoring the Global #AI #ethics Recommendation Instrument, leading the #gender and #environmental chapter 💪 ) And many more! (so grateful to all of you for your generosity of time) 💚 A profound appreciation, Paul Simons, for leading such an impactful program and curating beautiful sessions with Emma Sky Yuval Ben-David (congrats on the expansion of the Yale International Leadership Center! 🚀 ) And to you, @kelly, for making everything so easy for us. *** 🙌 These are my inspiring peers; check out their work Satrio A. A productive day in Brussels exchanging perspectives with the European Commission and Bruegel - Improving economic policy on how Europe is balancing an ambitious climate agenda with a renewed focus on energy security and a blueprint to reinvigorate economic competitiveness. It was thrilling to be in Brussels a day after the announcement of the designated von der Leyen II Commission. Thanks to DG ENER Deputy Director-General Mechthild Wörsdörfer for welcoming us — and everyone who participated in frank and wide-ranging conversations on industrial policy, international green hydrogen partnerships, renewables integration, and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism.
