US Fish & Wildlife just announced the proposal to list monarchs as Threatened! 🦋 It may seem surprising that a species that many of us are used to seeing in our parks and gardens needs federal protection. But the long-term data has shown that monarchs are in serious trouble. From decades of tracking monarch sightings across the country, and counting them at their overwintering sites, we know that their populations have dropped by 80% in the Eastern US, and by over 95% in the West. Small scale efforts, like people planting milkweed in their yards and community spaces, are very likely the reason monarchs aren’t in worse shape. But for them to actually recover, we need to work at a bigger scale. Protections from the ESA can allow us to tackle the larger issues the butterflies are facing: pesticide overuse, diseases, and habitat loss, especially at their overwintering locations. Today’s announcement is the result of many years of hard work. Xerces submitted the original petition in 2014, along with the Center for Biological Diversity, the Center for Food Safety, and the late monarch scientist Lincoln Brower. Xerces is excited to continue working with everyone from farmers and ranchers, to managers of roadsides and energy infrastructure, to individual enthusiasts to restore monarch habitat and help these inspiring animals. Read the full press release at https://lnkd.in/d3-tg-qZ Everyone can be a part of the solution to recover monarch butterflies. Visit xerces.org/monarchs to learn more about how to help.

Did you know... there is no state agency with the authority to list terrestrial invertebrates as threatened or endangered in Pennsylvania? And that means, there is no state agency that can coordinate with the USFWS on their recovery, and we can not take advantage of federal recovery funds without designating an agency home for these species. House Bill 2471 would amend the Wild Resource Conservation Act of 1982 and give the Department of Conservation of Natural Resources (DCNR) authority over terrestrial insects. If this bill passes, we'll have an agency that can: - take the lead on federal ESA coordination, including receiving and investing federal funds in recovery efforts - speak up for insect conservation in-state when we are discussing highway management and light pollution - protect native pollinators and secure our future food supply Thanks to David Hess for all the important environmental reporting, to Nate Reagle for his dedication to building invertebrate conservation in Pennsylvania, and to Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation for standing by us as we work to resolve this critical gap in state policy.
