The time has come to say goodbye to 2024. But as we prepared to disconnect to spend time with our loved ones for the holidays, we made time to go out into the world and amplify the importance of building economic equity for women. Closing out the month of November, we hosted workshops and did radio interviews discussing equal pay laws. And we spent December celebrating with partner organizations, attending holiday gatherings, and finishing up strong by discussing with WBEZ the experiences and challenges of women over 55 at work. WE also celebrated together―gathering in our new office for our annual staff holiday party! To get your monthly download of all we’ve been up to, check out our recap. And a special thanks to YOU for being an integral part of Women Employed. We could not do this impactful work without you. Happy Holidays! For the past four years, Kate Attea has served on Women Employed’s (WE) Board of Directors. There, she shares her time and talents, working with both staff and the Board on strategy and leadership. She has joined fellow Board Directors to help “friendraise,” lent her expertise to the development of WE Consulting, and continues to find ways to introduce people to WE and educate them on the importance of our work. And Kate’s nonprofit work goes far beyond her role as one of WE’s Board Directors. Please enjoy December's issue of She Says: https://ow.ly/OzPy50UuwLA

🎉 Women Employed is celebrating the start of Illinois’s groundbreaking salary transparency law that goes into effect Jan. 1, 2025!! “We are grateful to Rep. Mary Beth Canty and former Sen. Cristina Pacione-Zayas, PhD for their championship and Gov. JB Pritzker for signing into law this amendment to ensure we continue to advance pay equity across our state,” said Sharmili Majmudar, Executive Vice President of Policy, Programs, and Research for Women Employed. “In just a few weeks, Illinois will advance our leadership in closing the racial and gender pay gap. This simple yet powerful change will empower workers with information, as well as improve hiring and build trust in employers.” Read our full press release here: https://lnkd.in/ggqjVAdw #EqualPay #ShowMeTheMoney #SalaryTransparency

Women Employed reposted this
Thanks to Nicole Domanski & Sarah Martinez for hosting Women Employed last month. We appreciated the opportunity to facilitate a workshop with your Cognizant Chicago teammates re: Know and Earn Your Value with Illinois' Equal Pay Laws. As my colleague, Sharmili Majmudar and I always say, laws are truly effective and have power only when people understand them! Thanks again for hosting this educational session where we discussed the following topics: •The state of the gender and racial wage gap •Components of Illinois' current equal pay law •Recent updates to local and national laws •Preparing for what’s on the horizon in 2025 •Utilizing tools and resources to support negotiations •Ensuring you’re receiving a fair and equitable salary in this new environment If you're interested in hosting a similar session or want to learn more about our other workshops, trainings, consulting, and thought leadership we provide companies, please send me a message. I'll connect you with one of my colleagues who can help your company move towards building equity at the intersection of gender and race.

Women Employed has over 50 years of experience fighting for working women and winning! In the past year alone, we have: • Helped hundreds of women entrepreneurs start and grow their own businesses with the Women’s Entrepreneurship Hub (WE Hub), • Won expanded #PaidTimeOff for Chicago workers, and led a public education campaign to ensure millions across Illinois know their new #PaidLeave rights, • Passed a full and fair wage for tipped workers, who are overwhelmingly women. And we’re not slowing down! As we begin making our next moves for 2025, we are asking you to help fuel our work in 2025 with an end-of-year donation: https://lnkd.in/dSDwqePT

For women preparing to graduate college and enter the workforce, navigating systemic challenges and personal uncertainties can feel daunting. Sharmili, Executive Vice President of Policy, Programs, and Research at Women Employed, shared her journey, challenges, and actionable advice. In our conversation, she shed light on her path to leadership and her commitment to empowering women economically. — Elizabeth Weltzien, Public Relations Student at the University of Oregon Please enjoy Leadership, Advocacy, and Economic Justice: Sharmili’s Journey and Advice for Young Women, an interview by Elizabeth Weltzien with Sharmili Majmudar here: https://ow.ly/GN3Y50UlWRO #WomenEmployed #Leadership #Advocacy #EconomicJustice

As a Chicago-based organization that advocates for fair and equitable workplaces, we were deeply disturbed to hear of the recent harassment, discrimination, and retaliation allegations against a senior leader of the Mayor’s team. We are concerned about any workplace culture that allows harassment to thrive—especially a workplace, such as the City of Chicago, that should serve as a beacon and model for others. Read our full response to reports of harassment at City Hall. https://lnkd.in/g99Ftux8

🗣️ Did you hear? Women Employed has moved!! 🎉Our NEW address is: 67 E. Madison St., Suite 2000 Chicago, IL 60603. We’ve undertaken this move with a deep commitment to collaboration and careful stewardship of our resources. We will share space with our longtime partners, the Shriver Center on Poverty Law, allowing us to spend less on overhead costs, and put more money directly into our work to build the economic power of women and their families. While our office will be shared with the Shriver Center, we remain independent organizations, with individual missions and areas of focus and expertise. Women Employed will maintain our own space inside of the office, including our own meeting and collaboration areas. We look forward to continuing our advocacy—alongside valued supporters like YOU—from our NEW location! PS Come see our new space in-person this Wednesday, 12/11 at our Advocacy Council Meeting from 5:30-7pm CT. Register here: https://ow.ly/Etwe50UnGHk
