“….Now dream bigger.” Dr. D'Wayne Edwards Dr. Edwards starts classes at Pensole Lewis with his students by shifting their perspectives to reimagine what’s possible for them in their careers. Our work with founders is similar. Oregon’s first Black and Brown “Unicorn” companies will most likely not be born out of luck, innovation or great timing in a certain market. What’s most likely is they will be born from connecting and collaborating with partners who already serve unicorns who help them think, plan and execute bigger. Excited to work with Instrument to help founders shift what’s possible for their companies.
At Instrument, giving takes many forms. This year, we teamed up with Vanport Studio for Build Week—a pro-bono hackathon-style event where we used our creativity, design, and tech skills to help accelerate three BIPOC-owned small businesses: Camp Yoshi, Hot Mama Salsa, and Pacmodo. ✨🧡💡PROJECT HIGHLIGHT💡🧡✨ This Fall, the first ever Idea Camp took place at Instrument in Portland, Oregon. Brought to life by Jelani Memory and Stephen Green (with support from Vanport Studio and Multnomah Campus of Jessup University - School of Business), the Idea Camp was a three day intensive workshop for entrepreneurs who want to develop their ideas into a plan. Attendees learned from world-class business leaders, and worked directly on building out their idea. Co-Founder Laura Whipple spoke with students about the history of Scout Books and how our values impact our product design. And, Scout Books were included in each student's welcome kit. It was a super great experience! We continue to be amazed by the amount of talent that has been on the stage at PitchBlack over the years. Heart & Hustle Consulting one of our winners from 2023 did this moving piece for the National Football League (NFL) on the Civil Rights Act and some of the pioneers from the league.
