  • From the son of a sharecropper to a dedicated scholar, this story is a testament to perseverance and the power of dreams. At 72, Dr. Harold Williams has achieved an extraordinary milestone by earning his PhD in History from The University of Texas at Dallas! After serving as a Marine, Dr. Williams wanted more and returned in 2012 to pursue his graduate degrees. From working as a Ranch Hand and Horse Wrangler to walking across the stage in spurs, he has shown that determination knows no age limits. Since returning to school after getting his BS in 1979, Dr. Williams has been a beloved member of the OIT community, frequently visiting the Labs and utilizing OIT services. He often reflects on how the assistance provided helped get him through school. Our CA staff have cherished the time spent assisting him with his dissertation and general IT-related questions. His heartfelt gratitude for the staff and the support they provide is truly touching. Your story is in an inspiration to us all. Congratulations Dr. Williams!

  • The University of Texas at Dallas had the exciting opportunity to participate in the International Conference for High Performance Computing (HPC), Networking, Storage, and Analysis—known as SC '24 from the SC Conference Series! From November 17-22, our team joined over 15,000 global experts in Atlanta, Georgia, for a week full of insightful speaker panels, cutting-edge tech exhibits, and collaborative learning. This prestigious event was a great opportunity to share knowledge and drive forward the capabilities of modern computing.    During the conference, the High-Performance Computing (HPC@UTD) team hosted a booth to showcase our HPC initiatives and research. Visitors enjoyed demos and presentations from UTD professors, directors, and students on topics such as aerodynamic design, atmospheric turbulence simulations, and data storage management.     In addition, OIT’s very own Casey Foulds, PMP, Brian Dourty, and Ithiel Brazier contributed to building #SCinet, the conference’s high-tech, volunteer-built network used to showcase the latest advancements in HPC.     The team is currently working to roll out a new and improved HPC cluster and storage system to campus, aiming for a Spring 2025 finish date. By participating in SC ’24, we hope to bring more positive attention to UT Dallas as a leading R1 institution in the HPC community.
