As the search continues for our new director, we wanted to provide an update on some additional transitions. To better serve our mission and the UT research community, we are realigning our defense research support functions. While we will continue to support strategic pursuit of DOD-sponsored research, we will no longer be a standalone administrative unit within The Office of the Vice President for Research, Scholarship and Creative Endeavors (OVPR). To reflect these changes, we will be retiring the Defense Research Advancement name and DRA acronym. We are also transitioning away from social media. You can follow UT Austin Research for defense research news and announcements or email us at research@utexas.edu to stay in touch and to continue receiving updates. In addition, several of our team members have shifted into new roles within OVPR. Research development support, as well as associated events and external engagements, are now part of the OVPR Research Development unit. Christopher Hossfeld and Will Flanagan have moved to this RD unit and a new director will be hired. Post-award financial reporting support will be provided by the Office of Sponsored Projects. Cynthia Steiner has moved to this unit. Research Security will be supported through the Office of Research Support and Compliance. Laura Klopfenstein will continue covering defense research announcements and stories as well as other research areas at UT as part of the OVPR Research Communications team. If you have any questions about these changes, please reach out to us at research@utexas.edu.

Great opportunity to meet with researchers and scholars at the UT Austin Research Proposal Development Resource Fair. Enjoyed sharing how we can help with defense research project proposals and connect faculty with the DOD to acquire funding. We even got to hear a few pitches - always impressed by our world-class researchers!

Congratulations, Maruthi Akella!
I am still shocked and numb with the news just received: the International Astronomical Union (IAU) Working Group for Small Bodies Nomenclature named an asteroid in my name vide their latest bulletin (Volume 4, #14, Oct 14, 2024). This certainly cannot be possible without the support of so many distinguished colleagues in the astrodynamics field and all my excellent students. A big thanks to everyone. I can only strive to pay forward! Name: (5376) Maruthiakella = 1990 DD Discovery: 1990-02-16 / S. Ueda, H. Kaneda Indian-American aerospace engineer Maruthi R. Akella (b. 1972) is a Professor of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics at the University of Texas at Austin. He has been instrumental in advancing the control of complex dynamical systems with large-scale nonlinearities and uncertainties, contributing to many successful applications in astrodynamics.
