City Limits covered our Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day, an event that honors the lives lost to homelessness this year and recognizes the work we have left to do to combat homelessness. “The reality is that if we are able to provide access to housing that is affordable, and that’s decent, and then bring a level of services that are necessary to help [people] maintain their housing, we can solve this problem,” — Frederick Shack, Urban Pathways CEO Read more at the link below. https://lnkd.in/eXAFFzc6

Today is Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day, held each year on the winter solstice, the longest night of the year. We take this day to remember those lost due to homelessness this year, honor their memories, and recommit ourselves to the fight to end homelessness. This last Wednesday, Urban Pathways and Care For the Homeless held our annual Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day event. The evening began with a community meal and opportunity to connect. During the speaking program, we heard from staff members of social services organizations across NYC, advocates, and people with lived experience of homelessness as we honored those who passed away through eulogies, poems, and a reading of names. This year, 376 names were honored, along with a dedicated eulogy to all Jane and John Does, read by Urban Pathways CEO Fred Shack. It is our greatest hope that each year, we will have fewer names to read during Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day. Thank you to all those who attended, and to the individuals and organizations that contributed to this meaningful evening. We were grateful to host Assemblymember Tony Simone at one of our supportive housing facilities, Ivan Shapiro House, located in Midtown Manhattan. During his visit, Assemblymember Simone took a tour of the facility and met with our program staff, advocacy team, and some of our residents to learn more about the work being done at Ivan Shapiro House, and the lives of the people we serve. We couldn’t do our work without the support of our community. Thank you, Assemblymember Simone, for taking the time to learn more about the importance of our work!

We extend our gratitude to the amazing volunteers who dedicated their time and effort to help us pack 750 holiday bags for people experiencing homelessness on Tuesday night. Each bag is packed with winter essentials like blankets, socks, hats, and first aid kits and will be distributed to our outreach programs, drop-in centers, and safe havens. Our volunteers’ support and generosity ensure that those in need are cared for, and that they can experience a bit of holiday joy. Thank you for being a vital part of our mission and for showing the true spirit of the holiday season!

"Juan was a hardworking man; he would always head out early in search of employment … he always pushed forward and had stated the process of making a change in his life. … In this moment as we honor his life, let us remember Juan’s warmth and his amazing smile that would light up every room.” We are one week away from Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day on December 18th.
