The World Wilderness Congress (WILD12) and the 10th International Rangers Federation World Ranger Congress (WRC10) focused on strengthening connections, building capacity, and reigniting hope for reversing biodiversity loss. 🌍🚨 Rangers play a crucial role as emergency first responders in the face of escalating climate-related disasters and extreme weather events. A new study highlights the growing challenges and responsibilities they face. Key findings include: 59.6% of rangers have taken on more duties during disasters, from evacuations to rescue operations and delivering essential supplies. Over 60% of rangers haven't received training in first aid, flood response, emergency evacuation, or disaster management. 🌍 Exciting news! The Decent Work in Nature-based Solutions 2024 report by the International Labour Organisation (ILO), IUCN, and UNEP will be launched today at #UNCCDCOP29 in Riyadh. This report sheds light on how Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are becoming key tools to tackle pressing issues like land degradation, desertification, climate change, and biodiversity loss. But that’s not all — NbS also bring vital social and economic co-benefits, contributing to global sustainable development, including the SDGs. 🌱 A highlight: a case study on the critical role of rangers in NbS is part of the report. With the rising impacts of #ClimateChange across the world, it is crucial that the United Nations Climate Conference delivers concrete and accelerated progress across all the pillars of the Paris Agreement, particularly finance.    Finance remains central to the achievement of all #climate goals.     There is an urgent need for funding that addresses the scale of the challenge, covers the entire spectrum of mitigation, adaptation and loss and damage, and fully takes into account the needs and priorities of developing country Parties, particularly of vulnerable communities and ecosystems.    See IUCN’s #COP29 positions here http://www.iucn.org/cop29 UN Climate Change

Rangers matter for the Global Biodiversity Framework, but also because they are people who risk their lives. Massive congratulations to Juan Sanchez, the president of the Colombian Ranger Association, participating in the high level round table at COP16, supported by the High Ambition Coalition focused on Target Three of the KMGBF. The title of this panel is, ‘The recognition of traditional territories and respect of the rights of IP&LCs.’ Juan did a great job in highlighting how working with IPs helps to strengthen protected areas through co-management. He emphasized “common core” “common problems” “allies” and provided legal frameworks detail, which can guide other governments in the room.
