Committed to reducing childhood poverty and advancing racial equity in our region

About us

United Way of the Columbia-Willamette has been bringing our community together to do good for nearly 100 years. We connect the people, nonprofits, businesses and government agencies addressing poverty in our region. Our region’s poverty rate is down, yet poverty is still growing for too many kids. We continue to struggle with helping the kids who need it most stay in school and graduate. And, our region’s housing crisis has many families on the edge. The system is not working for ALL of our region’s kids which has an effect on all of us. We’re working hard to create a future where kids in our region are free from instability and worry so they can be free to play and discover, free to learn and grow. Free from poverty. Free to reach their potential. Together, we will continue to accomplish a lot for kids, families and communities: • More kindergarteners will show up prepared for school. • Kids who need help the most will stay in school and graduate on-time. • Families' basic needs will be met so their kids can focus in school. • We’ll keep connecting 1000s of volunteers to things that matter in our region. These strategies work when our community is UNITED behind them.

  • 🌟 Help Us Spark Curiosity and Build a Brighter Future! 🌟 This past weekend, we saw the incredible impact STEAM education can have on young minds at our STEAM Kids Wonderland event in Washington County. Families explored science, technology, engineering, art, and math together—unlocking a love for learning and discovery! But we can’t do this alone. With your support, we can bring more hands-on, engaging programs like this to even more kids and families in our community. Together, we’re shaping the leaders and innovators of tomorrow. 👉 Donate today and help us expand access to educational opportunities for all: https://lnkd.in/gP3DstMf Learn more and see some photos from this event here: https://lnkd.in/gTEzDMPT

  • 🌟 Shoutout to ZGF Architects! 🌟 A huge thank you to ZGF Architects for hosting an amazing book drive in support of United Way of the Columbia-Willamette! 📚✨ Their generosity is helping put books in the hands of local families, fostering a love for reading and opening doors to brighter futures. At UWCW, we believe in the power of early literacy to transform lives. That’s why we also partner with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library—a program that delivers free, age-appropriate books to children every month. While ZGF’s drive fuels libraries at home and in our community, the Imagination Library ensures kids always have a story of their own to cherish. 💙 Want to keep the momentum going? Help us expand the reach of the Imagination Library and make literacy dreams come true for even more children. Together, we can create a region where every child has the tools to thrive. 👉 Donate today: https://lnkd.in/g_yWUXvh 📖 Because every story starts with a book—and every book can change a life.

  • Exactly 137 years ago today, a Denver woman, a priest, two ministers and a rabbi (I promise this isn't the start of a joke!) got together because they wanted to help their neighbors in need. This simple idea, people uniting for good, was the spark that started United Way. Your local United Way was founded in 1920, and since that founding has brought caring, passionate people into the nonprofit space to ensure that our community can overcome any challenge. We are so grateful to our local community for helping us thrive, and for the global community that United Way promotes. This global conversation helps United Way of the Columbia-Willamette bring best strategies, fresh ideas and deep coalitions to the table when we work to solve the problems the Portland Metro region faces. Thanks for 137 years!

  • On Saturday, United Way of the Columbia-Willamette received the Catalyst Award for our pivotal role in shaping the founding of CAIRO’s Early Learning Programs and our long term relationship in advancing CAIRO’s equitable education portfolio. What started as a small initiative to support academic success for African students in our region has grown into a robust network of support and empowerment. Through partnership and perseverance, we've expanded services from K-12 academic support to Pre-K programs, STEM/STEAM initiatives, behavioral health, and prevention services for African diaspora communities. We could never have had such success without the dedication of our Early Learning Washington County team, which is a private-public partnership between our United Way and Washington County Health and Human Services. Together, we’re building a brighter future for African students and their families across our region.

Volunteers helped sort clothing for those in need at Clackamas Service Center, packaged books for teachers to take at Schoolhouse Supplies, made meals at Ronald McDonald House, responded to prisoner's letters with books at Books through Bars and cleaned books at Children's Book Bank! And that was only day one! There's plenty of more opportunities to volunteer this week, check them out here: https://lnkd.in/ej6-YDhz

  • United Way's deep connections to labor go beyond one day. We honor the movement and solidarity of unions that has led to a stronger and more equitable world for workers. We thank our partners at Labor's Community Service Agency for their year-round work to advocate for union families across the Portland Metropolitan Area. We have supported LCSA for decades because we know healthy communities, strong families and resilient people are the result of strong labor unions, worker representation and collective activism.
