About us
As the sector-wide network representing all Oregon nonprofits, the Nonprofit Association of Oregon (NAO) works across the state to strengthen and connect nonprofit leaders, organizations, and the sector as a whole. NAO accomplishes this by giving voice to the collective achievements and aspirations of nonprofits; growing organizational and leadership capacity and diversity; and facilitating knowledge exchange among nonprofits and across the nonprofit, public, and private sectors. Building on its rich history of capacity building over more than three decades, NAO ensures a future in which Oregon nonprofits are visible and valued as essential contributors to our society.

In September, NAO had the opportunity to host the Independent Sector across Oregon, connecting local voices to broader national trends and exploring both shared and unique dynamics faced in urban and rural areas. Sarah Spangler, Director of Nonprofit Education; Tim Rusk, Nonprofit Education Specialist; and Tia Bangura, MA, Program Manager at NAO, share their insights. During our listening tour, visits to Corvallis, Eugene, Portland, and Bend uncovered common themes that emphasize shared challenges and opportunities within diverse nonprofit communities. For more details, check out IS’s new blog here: https://lnkd.in/gpVsepKP.

This fall, NAO had the privilege of hosting Andy Robinson, Coach and Consultant from Andy Robinson Consulting, LLC, along with Kassia Randzio and Erin De Vries, Co-Directors of the Vermont River Conservancy. They facilitated an insightful session for our Alternative Leadership Structures: Co-Directorship nonprofit learning cohort. Collectively, they provided a comprehensive look at the co-director nonprofit leadership model and offered actionable advice on effectively implementing this structure. For more details about their session, including key topics like communication strategies, community perceptions of co-directorship models, and the potential impact of this structure on your organization’s finances, be sure to read Andy's latest article: https://lnkd.in/gvR4AUn7

This month, NAO is delighted to spotlight its longtime member, the Black United Fund of Oregon. We had the opportunity to connect with President and CEO LM Alaiyo "Dr. A" Foster, Ed.D., NCC, QMHP, CCHW (she/they) to learn more about the remarkable work the Black United Fund of Oregon is doing in the community and the substantial impact they are making! Founded in 1983, BUF-OR’s mission is to assist in the social and economic development of Oregon’s underserved communities and contribute to a broader understanding of ethnic and culturally diverse groups. Through its financial foundation and three pillars of service — community impact, post-secondary options, and economic justice and development — BUF-OR builds communal power by equipping, empowering, encouraging, and engaging BIPOC communities. To explore BUF-OR’s programs, including its Nonprofit Leadership Program, Post-Secondary Options program, and Economic Justice & Development program, be sure to read the full spotlight here: https://lnkd.in/gdqDCby3 A huge thank you to Dr. LM Alaiyo Foster and the Black United Fund of Oregon for providing us with a glimpse into the impactful work you are doing! The NAO team kicked off the month of December by volunteering at Habitat for Humanity Portland Region’s ReStore! At Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore, you will find a welcoming, publicly accessible home improvement store and donation center filled with new and gently used furniture, charming home decor, useful appliances, essential building materials, and much more — all at great discounted prices! The funds raised go directly toward supporting the home-building and repair programs of Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity has ReStore locations throughout Oregon. Be sure to check out Habitat for Humanity of Oregon’s website for a list of locations nearest to you. A massive thank you to Rickie, our amazing Store Volunteer Coordinator, Tonya, ReStore’s Store Manager, and all the incredible staff who helped our team organize this wonderful volunteer day! “Thanksgiving after all, is a word of action.” - W.J. Cameron Going into this long holiday weekend, we at NAO want to take a moment to thank you for everything you do in our communities – from creating safe spaces, feeding those experiencing food insecurity, providing shelter, inspiring others through art, helping our veterans, and protecting our environment, there is so much good being done by all of you. Our hearts are filled with joy and gratitude to be part of such an incredible nonprofit sector and to work with the incredible organizations throughout Oregon. NAO will be closed November 28 and 29 to allow our staff to celebrate in whatever way they choose, and to relax with their loved ones as we head into the holiday season. We hope regardless of how you celebrate Thanksgiving, that you take a moment to reflect on all the incredible work you do. From all of us, to all of you, we wish you a harvest of blessings, good health and good times.
