Excited to read StartupReporter's new article! (Sasha) Komarevych and I talked about startups, Y Combinator, Sovereign AI, and Star Wars. I know I should have kept the interview on topic and focused on our EuroGPT Enterprise launch. I don't know how I ended up with my favorite scene from Star Wars. The interview talks about my journey from Amazon to Ubicloud, how Umur and I co-founded Citus Data and Ubicloud, and what we learned along the way. It also talks about why we think Sovereign AI is a big deal. https://lnkd.in/eZSWDx2k Any comments or feedback are more than welcome as usual! Please chime in below.

  • Today, we are excited to announce transparent caching for GitHub Actions! This feature improves your GitHub Actions cacheDocker layer caching performance by 4x. You can enable it by clicking a button on the Ubicloud UI. Transparent caching gives you immense flexibility when using Ubicloud’s runners. You can switch in and out of Ubicloud’s runners without making any changes to your workflow files. You can run your CI/CD pipelines in a matrix configuration across GitHub’s default runners and Ubicloud to evaluate their price / performance. To make evaluating Ubicloud easier, we also provide 30 GB of free cache size per week with the transparent caching feature. At 3x of GitHub’s default cache size, 30 GB is the highest free cache size in the industry.

We just launched a feature that makes it easy for customers to migrate out of Ubicloud. Wait, say what? Ubicloud's new transparent caching improves GitHub Actions and Docker Layer cache performance by 4x! As importantly, it makes it trivial for customers to migrate out of Ubicloud. https://lnkd.in/gZEcrTpc Why did we work on such a feature? Because customers asked for it. "I'd love to try out Ubicloud runners, but I have complex workflow files. If I can change them, I'll have a hard time going back." So, we did what any startup who listens to their customers would do. We built a feature that makes it trivial to switch into **and** out of Ubicloud runners. Starting today, you get Ubicloud caching's benefits without making any changes to your workflow files. Don't like our product? It's just as easy to go back.

  • We've been quietly working on Ubicloud APIs for months now. As of yesterday, all Ubicloud API requests and responses are checked against an OpenAPI schema. We also have 100% branch coverage on routes. Plus, it's all open source. Huge thanks to Daniel Farina and Wesley Beary for this! A small (final) commit for the Ubicloud codebase, a big leap for having solid APIs.

I am relieved to have committed Wesley Beary's work to Ubicloud yesterday: now, all API requests and responses are checked against an OpenAPI schema, both in test and production. Although OpenAPI can be tedious to work with, it keeps the number of representations of entities in the API both consistent and less numerous, something I found I could not do by inspection accurately. Because we have 100% branch coverage on routes, we can be reasonably confident the schema is complete, and will be kept that way. It took some tinkering to streamline how tests would expose non-conforming requests and responses.

Excited to announce #EuroGPT for businesses at Slush! The first open source AI service in the world to our knowledge. Today, businesses in Europe need to use proprietary AI chat applications that offer limited transparency or control. Also, their data gets transferred to the US, making them lose jurisdiction over this data. EuroGPT solves these challenges and more. Key benefits include: * transparency, flexibility, and control - runs on Ubicloud's open source stack and uses Llama 3.1 405B, * over data that fully stays in Europe, * with the option to keep your knowledge base private, * and at 1/3rd the price of comparable solutions. If you’re an EU business looking for an open source and privacy conscious alternative, please hit us up! We’d love to talk. https://lnkd.in/eXmuZ4MF

  • We're excited to announce our new AI cloud service at Slush on Thursday! The key ingredients include "private AI in public infrastructure", Europe 🇪🇺, and open source. If you'd like to learn more, come say hi to us at our booth. We're in I11, right across from the start-up cafe. This will also be our first time in Helsinki. We hear it's lovely this time of year. :) So, if you'd like to talk to Ozgun Erdogan, Benjamin Satzger, or Ekin Akar, we'd be more than happy to meet!

  • We're excited to announce our partnership with Lantern! With this partnership, our customers get four wins: * Deep PostgreSQL and AI expertise from two Y Combinator companies * A way to build RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation) AI apps * Better price/performance than comparable proprietary solutions - Lantern's blog post talks more about this * Available to you on the cloud, at the click of a button

How do you build an AI app with PostgreSQL using open source? How does it compare in price / performance to proprietary solutions? Di Qi showed an example AI app doing just that yesterday at PGConf.EU. There were a lot of good questions during the talk, so she put all of this in writing in a blog post after the talk. 3 highlights: https://lnkd.in/eU7Y-QS4 1/ Lantern is building Postgres for AI applications. Ubicloud is an open source alternative to AWS. Lantern + Ubicloud announced a partnership yesterday, whereby Lantern uses Ubicloud for its managed cloud solution. I’m super excited about this! 2/ Ubicloud’s managed PostgreSQL uses NVMe disks. This helps performance significantly when the workload spills to disk. Example benchmark results compare QPS and latency numbers for Google Cloud + pgvector vs Ubicloud + pgvector. 3/ Di is really good at building open source RAG apps. :) She summarized her talk in a blog post and also uploaded her demo scripts in a GitHub repo. If you’re interested in learning more about how to build an open source RAG + AI app, please check it out. All questions or comments are also more than welcome!

As Ubicloud, we’re excited to sponsor the Cloud Hypervisor and net-ssh projects! As AWS, Azure, and GCP pour in hundreds of thousands of dollars in GPU credits to start-ups, we feel that key open source projects are getting left behind. For those projects that have been thanklessly maintained over the years, even small amounts can make a difference. Fortunately, my co-founder Daniel Farina is great at highlighting those. Just yesterday, I saw that Cloud Hypervisor merged in a change to enable Ubicloud sponsored arm64 runners (link in comments). It put a smile on my face. We might not be making the billions in revenue that AWS is making today, but we certainly have an open source ethos. So, thank you all open source maintainers who have been contributing to our digital infrastructure for years! #opensource

  • Excited to announce managed ParadeDB on Ubicloud!

#PostgreSQL shines for many use cases; full text search wasn't one of them. Then, ParadeDB came along. Today, we're excited to announce managed ParadeDB on Ubicloud. Here's what you get: * Easy to use search functionality on PostgreSQL * High quality results using relevance scoring * Solid performance, outperforms Elastic on all benchmarks * Open source, all the way down What's also exciting for us is the opportunity to work with amazing founders - Philippe Noël and Ming Ying! https://lnkd.in/e4eJYfSn
