What an honor! Last week, the Contra Costa County Admin Building and Jail Demo & Redevelopment (CCC ADR) team took home USGBC California's Green Building Honor Award in the Zero Waste and Circularity Solutions category. Webcor Sr. Sustainability Director Sarah Rege, Sustainability Manager Kavita Karmarkar, and Sr. VP, Project Planning Allison McCue (Bernard) joined our partners from Perkins&Will, Vanir, and All About Waste onstage at the Green Gala & California Green Building Awards to accept this fantastic recognition of CCC ADR's exemplary commitment to zero waste and a circular economy. As the world’s first TRUE Certification for Zero Waste for Construction-certified public construction project, CCC ADR achieved a 95.07 percent diversion rate, meaning over 15,211 tons of project waste were reduced, reused, recycled, composted and/or recovered for productive use in nature or the economy. Many thanks to our partners for their steadfast commitment to this historic achievement!

Recently completed is Atrium Labs, a full voluntary #seismicretrofit and #renovation transforming a neglected building into bioscience laboratories and offices in Emeryville. Highlights of this 126,000-square-foot project include: - Existing partition and shear walls were demolished, and new walls were added as part of seismic force resisting system, dividing the building into quadrants for tenant-focused flexibility. - Focusing on constructability and cost savings, a new steel platform with its own seismic system and foundation was designed to support heavy lab equipment above the building, without the need for expensive strengthening of existing wood members. - The original 1953 wood trusses showed signs of degradation failure. Along with repairs, the Tipping team developed a inspection regimen to detect and limit future damage. - Key interventions include a daylit atrium, skylights, and window openings; bringing more light into the building’s core. A new steel canopy shelters the new concrete stairs and ramp, welcoming tenants into the modernized space. 𝐌𝐲 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐍𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐀𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐬 I worked on a lot of projects in 2024 that required performance-based seismic assessment using nonlinear structural analysis. Some needed multiple iterations since the project was still in the concept phase.   Some were just too complex to satisfy all the modeling assumptions in one iteration. Total, I worked on 65 nonlinear models and ran more than 700 time-history analyses in 2024 for our clients. And, this data does not even include the nonlinear models created by other engineers in our office. It was not perfect.  I made mistakes and learnt from them.  There is so much more for me to learn in 2025. 🔖 What I love about working at Tipping is the extents we go to ensure we provide the best insights to our clients. The collective knowledge of structural analysis and design in our office is just amazing. #sanfrancisco #berkeley #structural #engineering #nonlinear #analysis #modeling #earthquake #seismic #design #2024

Recently installed is the Grass Dome, an immersive 22’ x 13’ sculptural space that serves as a gateway to the newly developed Five Points Park in Norfolk, Virginia. Designed by Sean Orlando, Lead Artist at Engineered Artworks, the #publicart placemaking project was commissioned by the Norfolk Arts Commission and the community to be a central feature of the new park. "I wanted to create a piece that represented the interconnectedness of the neighborhood and community. This piece is made up of 23 unique and individual blades of grass that come together to support each other within a unified circular form. When I think of trees, branches and blades of grass, I am reminded of the tremendous ability that nature possesses to bend under pressure before breaking. Members of the Norview community are all unique, hardworking individuals, and when we come together as a community to support each other with common purpose, we are stronger," remarks artist Sean Orlando. Painted at the entry of Casa Adelante at 2828 16th Street, check out the new San Francisco public #mural commission entitled, “Make Things New,” by renowned Royal Chicano Air Force artist Lorraine García-Nakataheck. Located within a designated Indigenous cultural corridor, this 4,000 square foot mural series was designed specifically for its residents and also acknowledges Indigenous wisdom. García-Nakata states, “As a muralist, my intention was to create an overall place of rest, dignity, and ‘medicine’ for all those who daily walk through this open space. The Make Things New murals affirm the necessity and power of envisioning in areas such as claiming joy, bond between parent and child, Indigenous precious wisdom, transformation, youth presence, and male contemplation." https://lnkd.in/g9DVr5Vt Architect and Interiors: LEDDY MAYTUM STACY Architects Contractor: Nibbi Brothers General Contractors Structural Engineer: Tipping MEP Engineer: EDesignC, Inc. Last week, Tipping's Larisa Enachi and Itria Licitra gave a presentation on "Multi-Story Wood Structures: Analysis, Design and Special Considerations" to a group of students in the 'Advanced Topics in Civil Engineering' class at San Francisco State University. Below is more about the seminar presentation: _ Wood construction offers a practical and affordable structural system that has historically been a common construction type for single family homes and low-rise buildings. Modern codes have expanded applications of light-framed wood buildings to a maximum of 5 stories. Further, code provisions allow multistory wood structures to be built over a more rigid podium structure and permit separate analysis of the light framed structure and the structure below. Multi-story wood framed buildings have become increasingly popular as a cost-effective approach to building housing units, especially low-income and affordable housing. We will discuss the gravity and lateral design and analysis considerations for these structures. Topics include differences between current practice and traditional one to three story wood structures as well as the implications of analyzing the light framed structure and the podium below separately. We will identify key simplifications that are typically applied and how those assumptions may impact design and behavior _ Thank you to Dr. Cheng Chen, Ph.D. for inviting Tipping to present at SFSU! #tippingstructural #sfsu #woodstructures #structuralengineering
