70% of startup tech companies fail, typically within 20 months of their first funding round. Creating a forward-looking financial plan is hard. Why? Because it forces you to acknowledge what you don't know. When you build a financial model the right way, it surfaces your uncertain assumptions—those uncomfortable unknowns most founders would rather avoid. It’s tempting to ignore those uncertainties... To put your head down. To keep doing what’s worked so far. But that’s not how enduring businesses grow. A strong financial model forces clarity. It illuminates unknowns. It guides you toward the levers that actually matter. Here’s the second reason financial planning is hard: It demands progress, not perfection. You’ll never know everything about the future. And that’s okay. They won’t predict the future... But they can guide your decisions today. If you can embrace that mindset, you’ll find clarity—even when the path ahead feels uncertain. PS - Maybe this completely throws my creditability out the window, but this is the honest truth: Financial models aren’t meant to be right—they’re meant to be useful.
