About us

Origin is a leading provider of pelvic floor and whole-body physical therapy with a specialized focus on pregnancy, postpartum, menopause, and sexual health. Origin offers virtual and in-person PT sessions, covered by insurance and supported by proprietary exercise programs, educational content, and community experiences. Origin was co-founded by Carine Carmy, Nona Farahnik Yadegar, and David Yadegar after experiencing first-hand the success of physical therapy to treat personal health issues — following years of missed diagnoses, ineffective treatment options, and hearing “that’s just the way it is.” Today, Origin is building a category-defining brand that establishes a higher standard of care for every woman and individual with vaginal anatomy. In addition to in-person locations in eight states, Origin provides virtual care nationwide and is in-network for more than 35 million Americans.

New study by Origin & Ipsos Highlights the Hidden Pelvic Health Crisis Over the years, we've gotten used to people telling us that pelvic floor symptoms like bladder leaks and pelvic pain  are "niche” issues that “only” impact postpartum and older women (as if these people count less?). And until now, we’ve lacked detailed and validated data to prove them wrong. That changes today. Conducted in partnership with Ipsos and made possible with a grant from Rise Together Ventures, the 2024 Origin Pelvic Health Study shows that pelvic health issues among women ages 18-59 have reached epidemic levels — and we are not getting the care we need. 🛑 Pelvic health symptoms impacted 8 in 10 women within the past year. 🛑 83% report at least one pelvic health symptom in the past year (75% report two or more) 🛑 The average number of pelvic health symptoms reported is 5 🛑 Millennial women are even more likely to report a host of symptoms than Gen X 🛑 64% say symptoms negatively impact their lives, yet 96% have not received a related health diagnosis If you’re nodding your head, repost to help drive awareness about these issues and advocate for more and better pelvic healthcare — and DM us if you want to collaborate on future research or discuss the data with our clinical team. The connection between the mind and body is more understood than ever before, yet research has remain limited—making the launch of the Journal of Physiotherapy in Mental Health all the more critical. The journal begins with a truth we see daily in clinical practice at Origin: the body is a gateway to healing the mind. PT offers so many tools—movement, breathing, body awareness, sensory stimulation—that can help individuals manage anxiety, trauma, and disconnection. This approach is especially powerful because it empowers individuals to take an active role in their healing. This journal comes at a critical time as rates of anxiety, depression, and trauma continue to climb across the globe. The numbers are staggering: the WHO estimates 1 in 8 people worldwide—970 million individuals—live with a mental health condition. Yet global investment in mental health treatment is just 2% of total healthcare budgets, leaving countless individuals without the support they need. An integrated approach that leverages existing parts of the healthcare system - including PT - is critical to close the gap. 💬 Let’s discuss: How are you addressing the connection between mental and physical health in your practice? Thank you to Moises Magos to you and the team for this new initiative! #MentalHealth #Physiotherapy #HolisticCare #WomenInLeadership https://lnkd.in/gVwHJRhx

Thank you to Overlooked Podcast for raising awareness about the very common but overlooked issues impacting women -- including pelvic pain. We talked about the importance of shared decision making with providers in the context of procedures like IUD insertion, and went into why pelvic health is so important. Appreciate your work so much Golda Arthur!

I woke up from the strangest dream last night. I was speaking to a travel agent about an upcoming flight to try to get a better seat, and she told me that "Unfortunately all the reserved seats for menopausal women were taken." They also had reserved (i.e., better) seats for pregnant women and those going through a particularly rough flow. In my dream, I was completely surprised - and elated - to hear that an airline was centering women's experiences and creating accommodations for increased comfort.* Can you imagine?! Instead of support, we have a society built around silence. The phrase "no one told me" is so common in the context of women's health that it's become shorthand for the brutal awakening that millions of women experience during life's biggest transitions. Eliza Barclay's recent op-ed in the NYT talks about the silence around the physical shifts (muscular and hormonal) that women experience in their 40s. Reading her piece, I can't help but feel the visceral double blow that comes from (1) the reality of the physical shifts in your 40s and (2) the emotional drain that comes when your health and wellbeing does not matter enough to be centered in any preventative dialogue. This was my experience with painful sex -- a decade of shrugged shoulders before I finally got a diagnosis and heard the phrase "pelvic floor PT" -- and it's the experience of millions of women and people with vaginal anatomy who suffer from commonly overlooked women's health issues. Take incontinence, which is so commonplace it's often ignored in any medical setting and is highly correlated with depression and anxiety. Silence at it's best is an act of reverence, of listening, a moment to pause and process. But collective silence, at it's worst, can diminish, belittle, and even destroy. I'm SO glad we're moving beyond silence in women's health. But we still have a lot of work to do to move women's experiences to the center...now more than ever. *Note: Whether one needs flight accommodations in menopause is a different question, but let's leave the dream analysis for therapy ;) Images: Articles and books about the silence in women's health. https://lnkd.in/gFa_FF5v

When doctors don’t feel safe, patients are not safe either. Healthcare providers are particularly selfless and empathetic. So when the fear of legal retribution makes them pause before helping patients, or avoid practicing in that state all together, we should all be worried. Take Texas. The laws have created a perfect storm of uncertainty and fear. 1) According to 60 Minutes, “Last year, the number of OB-GYN resident applicants in Texas dropped 16%.” The brain drain will create even worse healthcare deserts. 2) In the near term, doctors have to worry about prison time when considering life-saving interventions for pregnant women. ProPublica explains, “Texas’s abortion ban threatens prison time for interventions that end a fetal heartbeat, whether the pregnancy is wanted or not. It includes exceptions for life-threatening conditions, but still, doctors told ProPublica that confusion and fear about the potential legal repercussions are changing the way their colleagues treat pregnant patients with complications.” This isn't just theory. We saw this last week with the devastating death of Nevaeh Crain, a 20 year old pregnant woman who died of sepsis despite seeking care from the ER three times. Doctors - and their patients - deserve better. And while you may think I'm screaming into the void given the current political landscape, I have to keep hoping (and acting) as if we can break through. https://lnkd.in/gn9cDXtW https://lnkd.in/gVA5mA5s

"The postnatal period when a woman is lactating is one of the most, if not the most, nutritionally demanding periods of a woman’s life. In fact, lactation increases the demand for more than half of the essential vitamins compared to pregnancy and other life stages." - Adeline Grier-Welch, MS, MPH, RDN—Ritual's all-star registered dietician—weighs in on why a postnatal vitamin is just as important as a prenatal vitamin.
