In a recent opinion piece, the importance of respecting entrepreneurs and their investments is emphasized for Canada’s politicians. The article argues that politicians often overlook the significance of capital and its tendency to move towards more lucrative, lower-risk opportunities. This oversight could have detrimental effects on the country's economic growth and innovation, as businesses may seek more favorable conditions elsewhere. The piece calls for a shift in mindset among lawmakers to better support and retain the entrepreneurial spirit that drives the economy. The latest from the Globe's business commentary, by J. Ari Pandes, Michael J. Robinson:
Canada’s politicians must learn to respect entrepreneurs and their capital

About $174-billion of ETF assets are currently held at full-service brokerages, as of Sept. 30, according to Investor Economics, while another $173.2-billion of ETF assets are held in online discount brokerages. Now, as the year end approaches, the industry can see the tipping point for ETFs as the amount of money DIY investors are piling into the funds is creeping closer to the total assets held by investors who rely on financial advisers for purchases – marking a major shift in demand toward the lower-cost funds.

The Canadian dollar is expected to weaken in the coming years as global economic conditions shift. Interest rates in Canada are likely to rise again, reflecting changes in U.S. monetary policy. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell indicated that the Fed may adopt a more cautious approach when it comes to cutting interest rates. This decision by the Fed will have a significant impact on the Canadian economy and its currency value. The latest from the Globe's business commentary, by John Rapley:
Your loonie will weaken. Your interest rates will climb again. Welcome to 2025

ICYMI ... One would think that if faced with a double whammy of existential and economic threats, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau would radically rethink his government’s approach to fighting financial crime. Logic, though, appears to be lost on him and his fellow legislators. That includes Ms. Freeland, who gave this issue short shrift during her four years as finance minister. Ordinary Canadians are about to pay a steep price for the government’s failure to pursue holistic change, despite repeated warnings about the need to better align the country’s anti-money laundering regime with that of the United States. #financialcrime #trade #tariff #fentanyl #aml
Opinion: Trudeau fails to crack down on financial crime even when faced with Trump’s tariff threat
