Getting MEPs on board with emerging solutions is essential to bridge the technology gap and decarbonize the 1.4 billion square feet of New York’s tall buildings that rely on fossil-fuel based boiler systems for steam and high temp hot water. We were thrilled to be able to join forces with our friends at Jaros, Baum & Bolles to host a technical deep dive into cutting-edge high temperature heat pump and distribution innovations. The event brought together MEPs from Jaros, Baum & Bolles and across the state, and the fantastic finalists of our Empire Technology Prize – Ambient, AtmosZero, Clean Heat Technologies a Thar Company, Cycle Retrotech, ENERIN AS, Flow Environmental Systems, Gil-Bar, Hydronic Shell Technologies, Johnson Controls, and Miller Proctor Nickolas, Inc.. A sincere thank you to all who attended. We were energized to see the connections that emerged throughout the afternoon’s presentations, breakouts, and (affogato-fueled!) conversations. We can’t wait to see what comes next. Stay tuned for more updates and the progress ahead 👉 https://lnkd.in/eWrye8B7 Thanks also to our outstanding program supporters NYSERDA and Wells Fargo

New York’s vast networks of food service warehouses, cold storage, fleets, and retailers ensure we all have food on our tables every day. This sector is critical–and yet it is often overlooked, which means its greenhouse gas emissions are too often overlooked. And they are significant. Crucially, this sector has deep environmental justice implications as the major food distribution depots, creating some of the worst air quality in the region, are located in EJ communities. However, there are dedicated changemakers leading the charge in decarbonizing this industry. And many of them joined us for the concluding summit of our Food Service Accelerator. Rohit Aggarwala, NYC Chief Climate Officer, and Anthony Fiore, Chief Program Officer, NYS, framed up the core issues and the City and State supports for an industry where tight margins, customer disruption, and impending regulations make decarbonization a particularly thorny challenge. Our path-leading solutions providers – Flipturn, Ndustrial, Air Water Global, GlacierGrid, Bedrock Energy, Blue Frontier, Inc., and Energy Machines™ – and fantastic collaborators – Walmart, Albertsons Companies, Carrier HVAC, Con Edison, and New York City Economic Development Corporation – dove into some of the solutions and success stories from the program. Where razor-thin margins have stood in the way of the industry’s decarbonization, our companies are innovating business models to enable solutions with no upfront costs and developing full service solutions that provide ongoing support to customers, making their no-fail equipment more resilient and minimizing disruptions for this critical sector. To everyone who attended and everyone contributing to tackling this complex challenge—whether you’re in buildings, transportation, or refrigeration—thank you. While our food service Accelerator has concluded, this journey is just beginning, and we remain committed to finding innovative solutions for the food service sector. Stay tuned for more updates and progress ahead 👉  https://lnkd.in/gnHYTeTY And thank you to our supporters NYSERDA, U.S. Economic Development Administration, New Energy Nexus

  • This is a fantastic opportunity from our friends at the Trust for Governors Island. Be sure to take a look and apply by the December 5th deadline 👉  govisland.org/challenge

The 2025 Climate Solutions Challenge is LIVE! Through this opportunity, the Trust offers startups and young companies the space to test innovative and equitable climate tech solutions across Governors Island’s built, social, and natural environments that work to alleviate the impacts of climate change. Our city’s solid waste stream increases greenhouse gas emissions across its life cycle and disproportionately impacts environmental justice communities. A shift to a more circular economy that reuses materials and reduces waste is key to achieving an equitable, net-zero city. This year’s challenge seeks solutions exploring how circular economy products drive down the climate impact of the urban waste stream and extend resource recovery to our businesses and neighborhoods. Innovation tracks include low-carbon and circular construction products, services that reduce demolition waste by extending the useful life of existing systems, measurement tools that accelerate landfill diversion, and more. Learn more and apply by the December 5 deadline at govisland.org/challenge, and explore all of our current piloting projects at govisland.org/climate. Governors Island Climate programs are made possible with the generous support of Amazon, Con Edison, Deutsche Bank, the Donald A. Pels Charitable Trust, Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), and The New York Community Trust. #circulareconomy #climatetech #netzero #reuse

  • Our Head of Programs Thatcher Bell recently participated in a dynamic panel hosted by the REEF Refrigerant Emissions Elimination Forum, which dug into key barriers to decarbonizing building HVAC systems and insights from The Clean Fight's Empire Technology Prize. Read takeaways below 👇  and learn more about the Prize https://lnkd.in/eWrye8B7

🌎 We are thrilled to highlight one of our distinguished panelists at Climate Week NYC, Thatcher Bell from The Clean Fight, which is running The Empire Technology Prize! The Empire Technology Prize is a groundbreaking program designed to fast-track the commercialization of clean energy solutions that will drastically reduce carbon emissions in New York State, particularly in space heating for buildings, one of the most energy-intensive sectors. With seven impressive Finalists across start-ups and clean-tech innovators, the Prize is fostering solutions that help achieve New York’s ambitious climate goals. During the event, The Clean Fight discussed how the Empire Technology Prize is driving significant R&D investments and fostering scalable clean energy solutions. Here are some important takeaways from the panel: 🚀 What are the key challenges for business and government organizations trying to decarbonize HVAC systems?   Thatcher explained that the economic case for decarbonization isn’t always compelling for building owners, and different building types often require unique, tailored solutions. He stressed economic incentives and making a clear business case are key to encouraging building owners and operators to adopt decarbonization technologies like heat pumps and refrigerant management systems. Governments can provide incentives for upgrading to low-GWP refrigerants and to improve the cost-benefit analysis for businesses considering these investments. 🚀 What has The Clean Fight learned in developing and running the Empire Technology Prize? Thatcher Bell explained that many tall buildings in New York are heated by steam, and transitioning to low-temperature heat pumps would require a complete overhaul of their HVAC systems. The challenge is to develop "drop-in" replacements for steam systems that use lower-GWP refrigerants. The Clean Fight is at the forefront of innovative, scalable solutions that help decarbonize New York’s buildings and reduce refrigerant emissions—paving the way for a cleaner future. Are you a building owner/operator, tenant, or MEP interested in learning more about high temperature heat pumps and innovative distribution solutions? Reach out to The Clean Fight to be a part of the movement toward a greener future! 🔗 Learn more about The Clean Fight and the Empire Technology Prize:  https://lnkd.in/e-ksma27 #ClimateWeekNYC #BuildingDecarbonization #HVAC #EmpireTechPrize
