Luna, our Tuesday Bereavement Night Pet Partner, has been turning out the festive looks this holiday season and bringing so much joy to our attendees! This mystery mixed breed girl is a Canine Good Citizen, Certified Therapy Dog, and a Certified Animal Assisted Counseling Team Member and we couldn’t be luckier to have her support each week! Offering no-cost peer support services, outreach and education for Maine's grieving children and families
About us
Since 1987, The Center for Grieving Children in Portland, Maine has provided loving support to grieving children, teens, families and communities through peer support, outreach and education. The Center for Grieving Children's mission is to provide loving support to grieving children, teens, families and the community through peer support, outreach, and education. We honor and encourage the safe expression of grief and loss. We provide a loving community to foster the discovery and development of each child's own resiliency and emotional well-being. We are a beacon of light in the hearts and souls of grieving children throughout the world. The Center is a 501(c)3 organization, governed by a 25-member volunteer Board of Directors. The Board employs the Executive Director, who manages five full time staff, four part-time staff, and up to seven unpaid interns from universities throughout Maine. The Center has over 200 volunteers serving the children, teens and their families. Understanding that when a loved one dies is often a most difficult time financially, the Center does not charge fees for its services. Otherwise, the Center relies on private individual donations, foundation grants, United Way, and special events.

Yesterday our friends from Comparion Insurance Agency spent time at the Center decorating bags with drawings, messages, stickers, and filling them with different kinds of cookies to be given to our Intercultural Program participants this week. Sending them home with a little bit of sweetness! Thank you to all Center volunteers for your support of our mission!💚

Governor Janet Mills has proclaimed today, November 21st, 2024, to be Children’s Grief Awareness Day in Maine. This proclamation is a way to spread awareness and increase visibility and support for children experiencing grief in Maine. The Children's Bereavement Estimation Model estimates that 1 in 10 children in Maine will experience the death of an important person in their life this year. Let's join together in community to support our youth in their time of need. The Center for Grieving Children offers resources, programming, and support at no cost for as long as they are needed.
