Governor Janet Mills has proclaimed today, November 21st, 2024, to be Children’s Grief Awareness Day in Maine. This proclamation is a way to spread awareness and increase visibility and support for children experiencing grief in Maine. The Children's Bereavement Estimation Model estimates that 1 in 10 children in Maine will experience the death of an important person in their life this year. Let's join together in community to support our youth in their time of need. The Center for Grieving Children offers resources, programming, and support at no cost for as long as they are needed. Please reach out: cgc@cgcmaine.org. #childrengrieve #nationalgriefawarenessday #lovereallycounts

It's Children's Grief Awareness Week. Having seen my children experience close loss and grief from a young age, starting with the passing of my father when they were only 3 and 5, to other family members and pets, and then the loss of their own Dad when they were finishing high school, I recognise and fully support the policy focus of this year's children's grief awareness week. As the government reviews the school curriculum, I am so pleased to hear that experts in bereavement are calling for the addition of grief education in the school curriculum. I was amazed to some of the stats around children's bereavement. According to the Childhood Bereavement Network estimates, nearly 127 children between the age of 0-17 experience the loss of a parent every day. Child Bereavement UK reports show that 90% of teachers receive no bereavement training, despite 1 child in every class going through this. Grief and loss is a part of our life. Being able to support our children by understanding their feelings, being more empathic, providing them with a safe space to talk and educating their friends and teachers, is so crucial to their journey. Some of the consequences of grief result in isolation, and even bullying of bereaved children. I know in my own work with clients, I have seen adults with issues around abandonment, trust and lack of confidence go back to events in their lives where they experienced the loss of loved ones, and were not able to express their grief fully and safely. Children often don't understand what's happened, they may blame themselves for it, and even feel like they have been left and abandoned. Seeing this issue being debated in our parliament on Dec 2nd this year, really fills me with hope that we will educate not only our children, but those supporting them on this essential issue. What are your thoughts on this? Have you experienced loss as a child? Have your children gone through this? Did you/they receive the support needed? I would love to know. #cgaw24 #childrensgrief

FEED YOUR CHILDREN'S SPIRITUAL LIFE. Dear parents, Don't go about assuming your kids will learn when they grow up. Assumptions have led many parents to produce badly raised children, See your child as a blank slate that has been given to you to write on, Train up your child in the way he should go, The world we live in now is too corrupt for trial and error, Be intentional about your approach, What kind of a child do you intend to raise? Just like you set goals for everything you intend to achieve, What parenting goal have you set for the year? Peace🥰 #isiomakawekwune #teenigniteacademy #mentorshiptribe #childmentor #teenconsultant #teenmentor #parentingpartners #igniteacademy #igniteteens

A common myth is that children may not be impacted like adults after a death. In fact, it's not uncommon to hear comments such as "They are too young to understand" when referring to children's experiences of loss. Join Dougy Center staff for this FREE webinar on November 21 (10am - 11:30am PST) where we dispel myths and raise awareness about children's grief. #childrensgriefawarenessmonth
