Are college closures on the rise? A new model from the Philadelphia Fed predicts a significant increase in college closures due to the looming demographic cliff. With a potential 15% drop in enrollment, up to 80 colleges could close each year, doubling the current rate. This highlights the urgent need for strategic planning in higher education. Hierarchies and inequities embedded in the research enterprise exclude, silence, and harm too many. Our current system operates at an unsustainable pace that is only increasing, and the design of institutional reward systems privilege the quantity of publications, grants, and awards we produce over the quality of the same. This is why a practice of care is necessary. The inaugural “Ethos of Care Credential for Transformational Change” and the inaugural “Convening of Care“ developed research strategies to mitigate implicit bias and promote an ethos of care in the academic research enterprise. Early career faculty, academic research leaders, and academic research enterprise professionals engaged in deep conversations about the intractable and systematically entrenched problems of underrepresentation and carelessness in the academic research. enterprise. What makes a successful program? In 2024, AAG recognized the Department of Geography and Anthropology at the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire (UWEC) with the AAG Award for Bachelor Program Excellence. The department’s commitment to geography as an all-encompassing discipline underscores the departmental belief that “geography is everything.” Explore three key reasons how and why the department continues to evolve to meet the needs of the discipline and their students: https://bit.ly/3OLSwj7

In a recent article in The Conversation, William Moseley, DeWitt Wallace Professor of Geography at Macalester College and Vice President of the AAG, highlights the urgent need for a transformative approach to tackle Africa’s escalating food insecurity. The UN’s 2024 report reveals that 20.4% of Africans are undernourished, a figure that has been steadily increasing since 2015. Moseley argues for a shift from conventional commercial agriculture to agroecology, which leverages farmer knowledge and natural ecological processes. This approach promises sustainability and resilience, addressing not just food availability but also access, stability, utilization, sustainability, and agency.
