Earlier this year, we were honoured to host E Pā Wars with Ngāti Tamaterā in Thames. The event spanned one and a half days and welcomed Year 7-10 students from kura across the Hauraki rohe, along with whānau, hapū, iwi, and marae, to explore the world of digital technology and innovation.
Workshop Highlights:
👾 The Ngāti Tamaterā Pou Rahui team showcased their programme with VR experiences, including Te Mana o Te Wai: Healthy Oceans and a Climate Change initiative.
🌼 The Department of Conservation (DOC) introduced us to an app that identifies native plants.
✍🏽 Nikora Ngaropo taught animation, Wētā Workshop Ltd amazed with ghoulish makeup tutorials, and Arahi Hippolite led the epic ePā Wars gaming tournament.
💡 Lee Timutimu shared insights on tech careers, Elle Archer rocked as our MC and creating strategies, and Pera Barrett from Te Wānanga o Raukawa blended rapping with value-based leadership.
🎤 Ngā Iwi FM captured the event’s energy, with Isaac Te Reina beautifully documenting the images, voices, and video footage of our rangatahi and whānau.
This event aimed to inspire rangatahi and their whānau by showcasing the potential of technology, connecting them to opportunities that can support iwi, hapū, and the wider community. Building on last year’s success, we hope to share this template with iwi and hapū across Aotearoa.
A huge mihi to Ngāti Tamaterā, Sir Peter Blake Trust, Pera Barrett and Te Wānanga o Raukawa, Nikora Ngaropo from NNMD Ltd, Arahi Hippolite from Jain Tech Gaming, Ngā Iwi FM, Wētā Workshop, and all our incredible kaimahi and supporters. Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou!

During our recent Mātauranga session on music tech, Huia Hamon shared why Māori excel in this space:
“Māori are quite fearless. We’re so used to people telling us we can’t do it that, at a certain stage, it doesn’t really matter. It’s like, ‘I want this, I’m going to go for it.’”
Huia also spoke about how thinking in community drives this success: “Who am I doing this for? Who am I singing in te reo for? It’s for my kuia who couldn’t speak te reo.”

Talent RISE 🌊 – Supporting Māori and Pasifika rangatahi who are out of school or mahi, and potentially have no qualification into employment in tech or the corporate space.
Te Hapori Matihiko 💜 – A global community for Māori working, aspiring to work in the digital or tech industries.
What do all these places have in common?
While these are all separate brands and we all contribute differently, we all have the same mission to support and help change the statistic for our Māori and Pasifika people in tech.
Reflecting on the work and effort that consistently goes in to the programs at Talent RISE, which has led to Talent taking away the DEI award at the SEEK awards is massive.
It was not just one person or one program, it is knowing that to truly change outcomes in the DEI space it takes a village, it takes collaboration!
