What do we know? EPiC Seating is designed to articulate around an anatomical pivot point, allowing users to adjust their posture actively or passively. However, if this articulation is activated while the user is already tilted, it can lead to an unpleasant or even risky situation. This is more of a concern when EPiC Seating is being used to enable active postural variation. When the stiffer struts are used to absorb high tone, this scenario is still possible, though less likely. What should be avoided? There are two scenarios to avoid with the EPiC Seating system: 1. Squeezing the levers into an active articulation position while the user is already tilted. This could allow the back support to drop unexpectedly due to gravity. 2. Attempting to operate the tilt function while the levers are in a squeezed/active position. This could allow the front of the tilt-in-space manual wheelchair to drop unexpectedly. What is Recommended? It is recommended and the user manual clearly states that EPiC Seating should only be activated when the wheelchair is in an upright position. It’s crucial that users, caregivers, dealers and even clinicians understand the importance of ensuring that the levers are fully opened before tilting, and not squeezing the levers unless they’re prepared to do so. For added assurance, the limit pins can be positioned to eliminate the possibility of issues during tilted use. Simple use the pins to lock the articulation in the desired position. In Short EPiC Seating allows postural variation but activating it while tilted can be risky. Avoid squeezing levers when tilted or operating tilt in an active position. Always activate when upright. Use limit pins to secure the desired position. These simple tips can prevent uneasy situations for an end user and bad impressions with others.

Padded Foot Supports What are they? The Stealth Padded Foot Supports are designed to provide mild support to the lower leg while protecting against injuries from hard surfaces. The ergonomic contours conform to the foot and lower calf, with padded sections that shield against abrasions and pressure on bony areas. The uniquely designed upper section includes a heel cutout to eliminate contact with the heel, and a removable rigid inner support that provides ankle support while allowing clearance for the lateral malleoli. They come in three different styles: Single, Dual, Dual with Divider. The single is for users who need support on only one leg, require leg rests to swing away, or require leg rests to be in different elevations. The Dual style offers combined support for both legs in a single continuous unit. The Dual with Divider style also supports both legs in a single unit but includes a center divider for added protection and positioning. Each of these is available in a standard or tall height for varying lower leg lengths. Is there a trick to sizing? There is a very useful chart on the “technical” tab on the webpage for the padded foot supports. Rather than trying to memorize the sizing, simply use the chart. Check it out at this (safe) link: Stealth Positioning™ Padded Foot Support | Stealth Products, LLC. Why is the rigid inner support for the upper section removable? The upper support can be molded to help prevent undesirable contact during transfers. To do this, first remove the plastic support from the inside of the upper section. Using a heat gun, carefully apply heat until the material becomes malleable. Then, bend the material into the desired shape and hold it until it cools and retains the new form. The same principle applies when the support is causing excessive contact with the lateral malleoli. In this case, the support could also be trimmed
