Exciting to see OpenAI's TypeScript SDK recently surpass 2 million downloads per week on npm, finally edging out both the Stripe and Slack npm packages! Today we Plastic Labs are announcing brand new Python and for the first time NodeJS libraries for Honcho. Up until now the development process has been completely manual, but we took a step back and looked for ways to increase velocity. Early on during the initial design phases of Honcho I took a cursory look over sever SDK generation tools and wasn't impressed with the results, but, recently a new player Stainless joined the game and their HN post motivated me to give it another shot. Before I dived into trying tools I wanted to fully understand what is necessary for a good SDK. There's nice utilities like pagination and retries, but beyond that what style and interface should the code give to the user? The Honcho SDK up until now has been structured in an object-oriented fashion with objects that hold their own methods, however many other projects take the approach of using a singleton that contains all methods with static data objects. I reviewed a bunch of sources across the internet and concluded the style of the interface is really just a matter of preference and what really matters is having something that works and (key here) is well documented Ok so just document and if the code is sensible it's fine. From here I started to test out several SDK generators to see if I liked the generated code. Between the platforms I tried Stainless was my favorite with the most readable and sensible code. Within pretty short order I was able to upload my API spec and generate a fully featured SDK in python and finally get one for NodeJS too.
