Sharing the view from space to promote conservation for people and the planet
About us
SkyTruth is a conservation technology nonprofit that inspires people to protect the planet by using satellite imagery, big data, and the latest technological innovations to reveal environmentally damaging actions and make their impacts visible and measurable. SkyTruth gives away all of our data and analysis for free, so that conservationists, policymakers, journalists, researchers, and activists can hold polluters accountable for harmful activities that would otherwise remain hidden from view. Over the past two decades, SkyTruth has transformed environmental protection with satellite imagery and analysis. With our partners Google and Oceana, we launched Global Fishing Watch to track vessel activity at sea, and we were the first to demonstrate that the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill was vastly larger than the federal government and BP claimed. Today, with new technologies like machine learning and cloud computing, we are teaching computers to scan thousands of images available every day to automatically detect those changes around the globe. This will make it harder than ever for polluters, poachers, and extractive industries to get away with harming the planet. And it will create opportunities for governments and forward-thinking businesses to improve their environmental performance.

An oil spill off the coast of Peru is visible in Planet satellite imagery taken on December 21. According to media reports, an oil tanker identified as Polyaigos was loading crude oil on December 20 from an offshore terminal associated with the Talara refinery operated by Petroperu, and oil was spilled during this operation. Wind was blowing steadily from the south. On Saturday, oil began impacting beaches near Lobitos, 20km to the north. The slick appears as a long, light-colored streak on the Planet imagery. Lobitos is at the top of the image, where the slick curves in toward the shore. The Talara refinery is visible at the bottom of the image, with a large oil tanker anchored just offshore at the loading terminal. Two smaller patches of slick are visible just north of the tanker. “The Coral Triangle sits in the middle of one of the worst global hot spots of chronic oil pollution...We hope that by raising the visibility of chronic oil pollution from global shipping that we see happening just about everywhere that we look in the ocean, and the double threat that’s also posed by the expansion of offshore oil and gas production that people who are concerned about protecting habitat and considering biodiversity are going to now start looking at that as another threat that they need to consider in advocating for 30 by 30 globally,” John Amos, CEO SkyTruth Check out this piece in Inside Climate News covering the findings of our latest report on oil and gas activity in the 'Amazon of the ocean': #oilandgas #30x30 #coraltriangle #oceanhealth #climatenews #biodiversity #cop16

At SkyTruth, we’re fortunate to work with incredibly talented interns who bring outstanding technical skills to our team. Alana Lutz has been working with extensive aerial LiDAR data to create detailed, wall-to-wall canopy height maps across the Central Appalachian coal mining region—a region SkyTruth has been monitoring for over a decade, and where we were founded over 20 years ago. This research plays an important role in monitoring vegetation recovery efforts, as our focus in Appalachia shifts from tracking the expansion of mountaintop removal mining to assessing restoration and recovery. Check out Alana’s blog post to learn how she's using LiDAR to map and monitor this transition: https://lnkd.in/gWfv2CA9. And stay tuned for more as we find new ways to leverage LiDAR and LiDAR time series data to monitor mineland recovery.

Results of a new experiment show the camera flying on the NASA GOES-16, GOES-18 and the newly launched GOES-19 satellites, is able to pinpoint leaks or venting of methane—a potent greenhouse gas—as often as every seven seconds. This is great news for those looking for additional tools to detect #MethaneEmissions 🛰️ #EarthObservation #RemoteSensing #ClimateTech #TechNews https://lnkd.in/e5FDDvHy

Very proud of the SkyTruth team's contributions, particularly Kelly Franklin and the Cerulean team, to this report shining a light on the risks posed by fossil fuel expansion to the Coral Triangle, one of the ocean's true wonders
Drillers target the Coral Triangle. The Coral Triangle, spanning the waters of Southeast Asia and the Pacific, is a marvel of biodiversity. Home to more than 75% of the world’s known coral species, it supports endangered sea turtles, giant manta rays, and millions of people who depend on its bounty. Yet its vibrant reefs face a stark threat: fossil fuel expansion, reports Ashley Yeong. A report (https://lnkd.in/ggnvZwxG) unveiled at COP16 in Colombia paints a grim picture. More than 100 oil and gas blocks are already active in the region, with over 450 more planned, covering an area equivalent to Indonesia. These operations overlap with critical conservation priorities, including 24% of the world’s coral reefs, 22% of seagrass meadows, and 37% of mangrove forests. The risks range from habitat destruction to oil spills and noise pollution, compounded by warming seas. Energy demand in Coral Triangle nations is soaring, predicted to triple by 2050. Despite investments in renewables, fossil fuel projects dominate. Meanwhile, the human cost mounts. Over 120 million people rely on the Coral Triangle’s ecosystems. Oil slicks from bilge dumping and disasters like the Princess Empress spill wreak havoc on livelihoods. The solution, according to the report, lies in halting fossil fuel expansion in sensitive areas and embracing renewables. For now, the Coral Triangle teeters on the edge. Whether it falls depends on choices made today. As Florencia Librizzi, Esq. of Earth Insight warns, fossil fuel expansion is not just an environmental gamble but a humanitarian one. The stakes are global: protecting this marine Eden means safeguarding a cornerstone of planetary health. 📰 Coral biodiversity hotspot at risk from fossil fuel expansion, report warns https://lnkd.in/ghamv8Tt Images: 1) Coral reef in Sombrero Island, Philippines.
