Deep in the Amazon rainforest, the Parakanã people of Apyterewa Indigenous Territory steward their ancestral home with knowledge and traditions passed down for generations. This is a place where jaguars roam, silky anteaters climb, and three-striped arrow-poison frogs thrive amidst towering big-leaf mahogany trees. But this extraordinary ecosystem—and the Parakanã’s way of life—stands on the frontlines of the climate crisis. Located in a highly vulnerable area for deforestation, biodiversity collapse, and the threat to land rights, Apyterewa demands urgent action. In just a few months, community-led solutions here have begun to heal the forest, restore biodiversity, and strengthen the Parakanã’s rightful stewardship of their land. This is proof: Indigenous-led restoration works. In 2024, in partnership with rainforest communities in Indonesia and Madagascar, we’ve reforested 50 hectares of rainforest through direct reforestation and agroforestry programs. That’s approximately 100 football fields. We believe that positive change is possible. Outcomes like these – driven by rainforest communities – prove it. Support this work at the link in the comments to seed change with us! 𝗔𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗳𝘆. 𝗗𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲. 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲. Here are three ways to support the health of rainforest communities. 📢 𝗔𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗳𝘆. In the words of Maria Lúcia Xipaia de Carvalho, President of Juma Institute, at the first Meeting of Indigenous Xipai Women and Riverine at the Kaarimã village in the Xipaya Territory: “As we know, nothing lasts forever, but when you plant a seed, it will grow and bear fruit, so that is what we are seeding now. Today, we planted a seed in the heart of each mother, each aunt, each young woman, so that later they can allow this seed to grow—that is, pass it along to future generations what they are learning now.” Read the blog post below to learn more about how the women’s meetings support the uniting and strength of women’s ancestral knowledge. https://lnkd.in/eYAQgHGC #IndigenousKnowledge #JumaInstitute #RainforestCommunities

In August 2024, Juma Institute held the first Meeting of Indigenous Xipai Women and Riverine at the Kaarimã village in the Xipaya Territory. This joyful event’s focus was to unite and strengthen women's ancestral knowledge, promote cultural practices, and encourage the exchange of knowledge between communities of the Xipaya Indigenous territory and its partners. We thank the communities involved for allowing us to share these images, videos, and insights from this event, the Kaarimã village, who hosted this celebration of the importance of cultural preservation, and all the Xipaya people, who have been SAMA-HIH’s partners since its beginnings. To learn more about the event, read our blog post linked below! #JumaInstitute #Kaarimã #IndigenousKnowledge #RainforestCommunities #AncestralKnowledge

Meet Solange in Vohilava, Madagascar, who shares her recent experience undergoing treatment for cervical cancer in order to help spread the word. Healthcare is a human right, but beyond that, as Solange explains, healthcare must also be accessible. The healthier we are, the better we are able to care for ourselves, our families, and the local environment. Healthier communities are also more resilient to climate shocks. That’s why Health In Harmony has supported community-designed healthcare initiatives in Madagascar since 2019, with a focus on not just cervical cancer, but vaccinations, malaria prevention and malnutrition treatments. Last year, 647 patients were screened for cervical cancer. #CervicalCancerTreatment #CommunityDesign #HealthcareInitiatives #AccessibleHealthcare
