We're inspired by the resilience and spirit of Asheville, NC, as it navigates the ongoing challenges of recovering from the fall hurricane. Our team is proud to support projects that honor the city’s character while planning for a stronger future. #AshevilleStrong #CommunityResilience #UrbanPlanning
I spent 48 hours in Asheville, NC doing preliminary research for my studio course next semester. I spent time surveying the damage to the River Arts District and the Biltmore Village. My heart ached seeing the destruction and the long road to recovery that the city faces. It’s going to be challenging but I know Asheville will recover. If you want to see photos of the disaster, of the heart break, of the loss, you can go Google them. But I want to share photos of the city that I love, of the spirit and joy and resilience of the city. This is why I chose this studio project, because of this great city. Thank you to Kathryn LetendreScott from Sizemore Group for taking the time to meet with me and show me how the city and surrounding towns have been impacted by the flooding, and the repercussions of the infrastructure failures. Thank you also to Joel Helms for your insight and direction for this project. We are lucky to have great partners from Atlanta and Asheville. Also, thank you to Maggie Carnevale and Jonathan Capp at LS3P ASSOCIATES LTD. for their open hearts and open door. Building a better future for the RAD starts with a vision and I know with your help we can make our ideas come to life. And finally, thank you to Benjamin Holsinger, Jon Penndorf, FAIA, Betsy del Monte, FAIA and Hannah Spates for meeting with me to discuss sustainable resilient planning strategies. I cannot wait to work with you all next semester to bring your expertise to my students. Thank you all, this holiday season I am filled with hope and joy for a brighter future. -Jon Gould Roneisha Worthy, PhD Kennesaw State University KSU College of Architecture and Construction Management
