It's always nice to have a fresh headline that addresses the timeless proverbial question of "What does the Southeastern Ohio Port Authority actually do?". This is the largest single grant award in our 22-year history and it has raised the bar for #brownfield #revitalization in our community. The Memorial Health System - Ohio Belpre Medical Campus project will transform a former manufacturing and chemical storage facility into "a state-of-the-art facility offering pediatric, obstetric, and gynecological services, including a level II neonatal intensive care unit". Memorial's partnership with Akron Children's will "support families and provide specialized care for women and children unlike ever before with a modern, welcoming environment.” I truly believe this is one of the best examples of what brownfield redevelopment can be in the entire nation. The remediation and redevelopment of the Remington-Rand property in Marietta opens the door for an incredible mixed-use complex. How many cities have 11 acres of prime real estate in the heart of town poised for impactful development? Marietta does and this is just the tip of the iceberg for that vision. What day is it? It's Demo Day!!! From concept to results in less than a year, which is lightning fast in government! In partnership with the City of Marietta, we formed the Residential Revitalization Program to leverage Ohio Department of Development Site Revitalization funding in our effort to reduce blight in strategic geographic areas within the city. Our first acquisition and demolition was none other than the "most notoriously blighted property in Marietta", also known as "The Compound". As a direct result of our goal - which is to improve and increase the overall housing stock in Marietta - we've removed one of the biggest #health and #safety factors in the entire city. This is a huge win for the community and we're excited to start working on Phase 2 of the project! #housing #revitalization #community #development

A couple of years ago our Commissioners took a bold step and formed the County Grant Department. Since then, and in partnership with the team at Sunday Creek Horizons, the County has brought in nearly $50M in funding, the latest of which is $1.5M from the US EPA. "Washington County has been selected to receive $1,500,000 to inventory sites and conduct a minimum of 25 Phase I and 12 Phase II environmental site assessments. Grant funds also will be used to develop a minimum of five cleanup plans and area-wide plans and support community engagement activities. Assessment activities will focus on the Muskingum River Industrial Park in the village of Beverly, the D.O. Business Hall Center in the city of Cambridge, and the villages of Piketon and Beaver. Priority sites include a 60-acre former coal-fired power plant, a 140-acre parcel of mine-scarred land, and a former high school. Non-lead coalition members include the Pike County Board of Commissioners and the Cambridge-Guernsey County Community Improvement Corporation." These new resources are a great first step in the development process and organizations like the Southeastern Ohio Port Authority and the Cambridge Guernsey County Community Improvement Corporation can enhance our inventory of sites, thereby making our communities even more marketable.
