🌊 We're thrilled to announce that SEATREC has been named one of 20 winners of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Powering the Blue Economy™: Power at Sea Prize! ⚡. This recognition highlights our groundbreaking concept: harnessing the ocean's thermal energy to power a subsea robot equipped with a side-looking echosounder to map marine living resources—including vital zooplankton—on a planetary scale. Zooplankton, the unsung heroes of the marine ecosystem, play a critical role in aquatic food webs and global carbon cycling. With our thermally-powered float, we'll measure their distribution and diurnal behaviors at key times (sunrise, noon, sunset, and midnight) at depths of up to 1,000 meters and surface every six hours. This work will advance knowledge of upper ocean pelagic habitats and contribute to better ocean health management. This prize moves us closer to sustainable solutions for long-endurance ocean measurements, bridging gaps in marine science while championing renewable energy innovation. Great to hear of the progress on this acoustic tool!
To advance deepwater soundscape exploration, our Kaustubha (Kaus) Raghukumar is leading a research team from SEATREC Inc., Proteus Technologies LLC, Monterey Bay Research Institute, the Naval Postgraduate School, and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography to develop and demonstrate the first ever autonomous, near real-time, directional acoustic profiling float powered by marine renewable energy. On September 23–27, 2024, they deployed a modified version of Seatrec’s infinTE(TM) float for its first field demonstration off the coast of Oceanside, California. 🙏 A big thank you to the Los Angeles Times for highlighting the invaluable support from the Small Business Development Corporation of Orange County and the IBank California for SEATREC! This $1M, state-backed loan empowers us to scale production of the infiniTE™ Float, a technology harnessing renewable thermal energy from ocean temperature changes to advance oceanographic research. 🌊 We’re proud to be part of this clean technology movement that supports both scientific discovery and environmental sustainability. Exciting things are on the horizon as we push boundaries in #hurricane #rapidintensification prediction, #seafloor measurement, and sound monitoring of #whales and ocean soundscapes. #CleanTech #ClimateFinance https://lnkd.in/gw4TePDW

🌊Follow our infiniTE™ float in the Gulf of Mexico! With 79 profiles in just a few weeks, the float's path indicates a strong coastal current following the bathymetry. As it continues its journey, the float is currently positioned northwest of #HurricaneMilton, gathering critical subsurface data in real time. Stay tuned as we continue to navigate through #HurricaneSeason2024. #hurricane #rapidintensification #OceanData #robotics

🌀Our infiniTE™ Float is profiling to 500 meters every six hours. Warm waters in the upper 100 meters are providing plenty of "fuel" for the #rapidintensification of #HurricaneHelene.🌡️ Stay tuned for developments in the coming hours. Stay safe. #HurricaneSeason2024 #Hurricane

🌀 Our infiniTE™ float is just west of #HurricaneHelene’s forecasted track, deployed 100 miles off Destin, FL in 1000m+ deep waters. It’s following a cyclonic circulation pattern parallel to the topographic contours. We expect major data changes as the #hurricane passes through the float's location. #HurricaneSeason2024
