About us
For nearly 50 years, SEARHC has provided high-quality healthcare services to the residents of Southeast Alaska. Operating as an independent and nonprofit health Consortium, SEARHC provides a comprehensive range of health-related services, including primary, urgent and specialty medical care, dental services, behavioral health support, wellness programs, optometry services and more. We are dedicated to improving the health, well-being and quality of life for all people in these communities. SEARHC is committed to keeping care closer to home and making advanced medical technologies accessible to all. One of the many ways SEARHC does this is by offering specialty clinics or sending medical specialists to remote communities and facilities to care for patients who cannot travel. Established in 1975, SEARHC is one of the largest Native-run health organizations in the United States. In 1976, SEARHC contracted with the Indian Health Service under the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act to assume management of the Community Health Aide Program. Today, SEARHC has more than 1,700 employees and operates in 27 communities throughout Southeast Alaska, including two Critical Access Hospitals.

✨ Celebrating Kuelene Tupou: A Future Leader in Healthcare ✨ Today we bid farewell to our incredible HR intern, Kuelene Tupou, as she wraps up her internship with SEARHC. Kuelene has been a vital part of our team, bringing energy, compassion and learned experiences to everything she touched. Kuelene is Alaska Native, originally from Juneau and in her final semester at BYU-Idaho, earning a degree in Healthcare Administration. Her passion for healthcare stems from personal experience—growing up, she saw family members navigate health challenges like diabetes and schizophrenia. These experiences, combined with her mom’s work at Central Council of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska Housing Authority, ignited her drive to give back to her community. Initially, Kuelene considered nursing but discovered her love for business and finance. This led her to focus on the administrative side of healthcare, where she’s determined to make a difference. As a SEARHC intern, Kuelene not only supported HR operations but also gained three professional recruitment certifications, giving her a leg up in her career pursuits. She shared career paths in healthcare with high school students — giving those who may not pursue college additional options—and inspired the next generation to explore opportunities to support their communities. Kuelene’s goals are clear: 🌟 Short term: Graduate in April and explore new adventures, including traveling the world. 🌟 Long term: Make a lasting impact on Alaska Native healthcare, ensuring access to quality care for all. She envisions “matchmaking” physicians with Alaskan communities and seeing healthcare providers transform lives. Making an impact not just on individuals but on our community’s health as a whole Kuelene, we’re so proud of all you’ve accomplished during your time with SEARHC. Your dedication, skills and commitment to giving back are inspiring, and we can’t wait to see the incredible impact you’ll make in the years ahead. Best wishes on your journey—we know this is just the beginning! \#HealthcareLeadership \#SEARHC \#AlaskaNativePride \#InternSpotlight

To truly appreciate the richness of Alaska Native traditions, we must recognize how physical and mental discipline were deeply woven into cultural identity. For the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian peoples of Southeast Alaska, survival and well-being were built on rigorous practices that began at birth. From cold-water baths to character-building rituals, these traditions fostered both physical strength and inner resilience—essential traits for enduring the challenges of the region's elements and history. From the ancestral roots of Southeast Alaska to the founding of SEARHC, Alaska Natives have preserved their spirit of resilience and sense of community through these enduring cultural practices. This month, we honor and celebrate these traditions. #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth #SEARHC #SoutheastAlaska
