Building support for the scientific method and for research that can help can people and our world excites me. In this week's Science Magazine Editorial, Holden Thorp asks an important question about how this is work done: "In the century since the [Scopes trial], has making individuals with different views uncomfortable been a useful tactic for building support for science?" Thorp talks with Jennifer Wiseman, who used to direct the AAAS Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Religion. Wiseman, a Christian and an astronomer, said that scientists are increasingly eager to engage with people of diverse faiths and cultural perspectives. The views within these groups regarding science and faith can vary considerably. But members in these communities are also contributing to science -- and invested in it. Thorp concludes: "...the goals that science has set for itself regarding inclusion of diverse groups of people—to facilitate creative thinking, innovation, and progress for all—would be enhanced by finding a way to teach and practice science while including...people of faith." https://lnkd.in/eRJaUhcz
