87 Trumbull Street has received the AIA New England Honor Award for Excellence in Architecture. The jury remarks: “The design thoughtfully integrates modern materials and techniques, ensuring durability and sustainability. Beautifully nestled within a small footprint between two historic educational buildings, the 87 Trumbull Street project seamlessly blends contemporary architecture with reinterpreted historic details. Cast stone elements emulate the original terracotta banding of 28 Hillhouse, while bay windows recall the character of the older structures, creating a cohesive aesthetic that respects the scale and context of the Hillhouse Avenue Historic District. It stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of the old and the new in a historically significant setting.” #aia #aia24 #aiahonorawards #aianewengland #schwartzsilver #archiects #architecture #yale
Schwartz/Silver Architects
Architecture and Planning
A nationally recognized architecture firm specializing in planning and design for museums, libraries, and institutions.
About us
Schwartz/Silver maintains its founding idea of integrating creativity, discovery and conscientious practice through collaboration among its architects and clients. This professional interaction -- fostered by our open studio space in downtown Boston -- supports the work of all our projects and gives us the energy to find new forms for new challenges. Our practice serves academic institutions, libraries, museums, public agencies and private individuals, with designs for new construction, renovations and planning studies. Many projects combine new architecture and historically significant older buildings, with several of them recognized in our six AIA National Honor Awards and over thirty AIA regional and chapter awards. We believe that the best design results from a combination of the architect's creative talents with a thoughtful engagement with a client. To do that, we research and document the environment of each project, its particular circumstances and the human needs they reflect, and test our ideas against that understanding. When a dedicated client joins our process of exploration and exchange, they become our partner, and together we begin to discover the sources of meaningful architecture.

Our office had the pleasure of touring the ongoing renovation of American Ancestors on Newbury Street. The project designer, Ethan Levin, presented the unique design challenges of reconstructing a historic building, while also renovating and integrating the adjacent historic high-rise. We’re eagerly anticipating the final reveal in a few months. Stay tuned! #Architecture #DesignTour #Boston #AmericanAncestors #NewEnglandHistoricGenealogicalSociety #NEGHS #SchwartzSilverArchitects

Schwartz/Silver’s 87 Trumbull Street at Yale University unites the Department of Economics which had previously been scattered in multiple buildings along Hillhouse Avenue and creates a home for the Tobin Center for Economic Policy. Engaging with the scale and context of the architecture in the Hillhouse Avenue Historic District, the new building connects to four existing structures and provides a variety of spaces that foster collaboration among students and faculty. The LEED Gold project is the first all-electric facility at Yale University.
