  • Meet the cast of CSI: St. Charles County 🔬📸 Ashley Burkemper is the youngest member of the CSI team. She says it was the TV shows that first drew her in. “When I was growing up all the crime scene shows were pretty popular,” Burkemper says. “I was very into CSI Las Vegas. Gil Grissom—loved him and all those characters—and that kind of got me into it.” Then she went to college for criminal justice, graduated, and worked 8 years as a County 911 emergency dispatcher before an opening came up in CSI. She applied for the job and got it. Now on the team for two-and-a-half years, she still gets excited when she finds some good evidence at a crime scene. • St. Charles County’s online building codes are now easier to navigate—so permitting for your winter and spring projects can move more quickly and be ready for use. The new interface smoothly combines the standardized set of building codes (“I-Codes”) used by most local governments with amendments specific to St. Charles County. Those used to be two separate references. The online code “book” integrates the 2021 I-Codes adopted as of Jan. 1, 2024, along with any amendments made by the County. The codes are available to view at sccmo.org/CustomCodes Read the article: https://lnkd.in/gN6-qDp8

  • St. Charles County Executive Steve Ehlmann is selecting Mike Sommer, a local business owner and extensively involved community advocate, to lead the County’s Finance Department. Sommer has owned Sommer & Associates, CPAs in St. Charles for more than 30 years. He also spent 12 years on the Francis Howell Board of Education, including three years as president. He currently serves as Advisory Board chairman for The Salvation Army of St. Charles County, treasurer of St. Charles County Regional Crime Stoppers, and president of the Rotary Club of St. Charles. He is the past president of the St. Charles Regional Chamber of Commerce. “Mike has given extensively of his time to his community, and is highly qualified for the Finance Director position,” says Ehlmann. “His long experience as a CPA will help ensure St. Charles County continues to be a responsible steward of taxpayer dollars.” Sommer’s appointment is effective Jan. 1 and requires a vote of approval from the St. Charles County Council, which will be taken up on Dec. 16. Following his confirmation, Sommer will take over for Tracy Bayne, who has served as acting director since 2022. “I want to express my sincere appreciation to Tracy for her leadership of the department as its acting director,” says Ehlmann. “She and the staff of the Finance Department have been dedicated to working hard on behalf of the citizens they serve.” Read on our website: https://lnkd.in/gr32tp-X

  • People who signed up for the Seniors Real Estate Property Tax Relief Program will see that new status marked as a credit on their tax bill this year—but there’s likely not much to see in 2024. “You’ll see it in the credit column on your tax bill, but the amount of the credit will be zero,” says Collector of Revenue Michelle McBride. This is because the relief works by reducing the tax increase caused by home value reassessments, and there were no reassessments in 2024. Those who went through the application process this year will still see some benefit: They’ve locked in 2024 as their base year for future taxes on their home and the process for renewing should be a lot faster than the initial application, McBride says. “Renewal will just require a signed, notarized form saying you’re still the resident owner at that address and you haven’t changed how the property is titled by doing something like putting it in a trust,” she explains. “Those 2025 renewal forms will be in the mail along with your real estate tax bill. For those wishing to renew online, the site will open on March 1 and your 2024 bill will have your 2024 personalized renewal code printed on it,” McBride says.
