Can we meet surging data center energy needs with speed, scale, cost-effectiveness, *and* sustainability? Yes, according to this new white paper from Scale's Duncan S. Campbell and collaborators including Zeke Hausfather and Nan Ransohoff from Stripe and Kyle Baranko and James McWalter from Paces, which shows that off-grid solar microgrids can compete with (or surpass) natural gas-only systems on key metrics for AI hyperscalers. It’s a thought-provoking contribution to the discussion around one of 2024’s biggest energy stories, and it’s well worth a year-end read for anyone interested in this massively important topic in 2025 and beyond: https://www.offgridai.us/

Absolutely honored to be able attend Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI) ‘s LACItizen event last night with Shea Hughes repping Scale Microgrids. LACI has been putting in the long hours to get LA prepared for the upcoming 2028 Olympic Games with great events like this one and great consortiums like the Transportation Electrification Partnership and the Clean Energy Partnership that Scale is lucky to be a part of. Everyone at LACI is amazing but I especially want to thank Mayte Sanchez for her work leading the CEP and Jillian Misrack for letting Shea and I join in the fun at the LACItizen’s Awards!

Load growth from data centers, manufacturing, and electrification writ large is THE topic in the US energy industry, and companies are looking at a wide range of solutions - including distributed energy - to accelerate their time-to-power. Scale's Duncan S. Campbell recently moderated a provocative DER Task Force panel packed with front-line perspectives on the power system expansion challenge, featuring industry heavyweights including Ari Matusiak, Astrid Atkinson, Jesse Peltan, and Andy Lubershane. Load up, tune in, and DER out! https://lnkd.in/eh-aZ_qb

Origo Cold Storage and RTC Solutions Provider Scale Microgrids are establishing low-carbon operations at Amond World, a new 500,000 square foot refrigerated cold storage facility in the Madera Airport Industrial Park in California’s Central Valley. In 2023, Scale Microgrids designed and built an off-grid #microgrid that includes a 1,200 kW solar PV array, a 1,200 kW battery storage unit, and two 1,200 kW natural gas-powered dispatchable generators to provide the facility with electricity for refrigeration of almonds and other crops from local farmers. With a “microgrid-as-a-service” model, Scale Microgrids eliminated upfront capital costs and operations and maintenance responsibilities for Origo. In return for these energy services, Origo pays a fixed price per month under a long-term services agreement. The cold storage facility can store approximately 100 million pounds of almonds and other recently harvested crops, which require proper storage to avoid revenue losses from spoilage and loss of water content. The microgrid provides Origo with geographic flexibility, enabling the company to locate the cold storage facility near where crops are harvested to maximize their value and support local farmers. New EIA data shows that for 20 years, the cost of producing electricity has been falling, but the cost of transmission and distribution has been going up – especially on the distribution side. Fundamentally, distributed energy resources and microgrids are, and will be, essential for powering economic growth. https://lnkd.in/eMAY_grj

Last week, Scale's Tim Hade participated in a ribbon-cutting event for the Goleta Water District's new battery microgrid, which will boost resilience while cutting costs and emissions for this essential service. It's a win-win-win for the Goleta community - and a great example of how DER providers like Scale and the public sector are working together to solve local problems. https://lnkd.in/eJ7iag7Q
