The World Economic Forum reports that over 430 million metric tons of plastic are produced annually, with millions leaking into the environment, contributing to biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation. Only 16% of plastics are recycled, while the majority ends up in landfills or is incinerated, releasing pollutants that impact air quality and contribute to climate change. By 2050, plastic production and incineration could release billions of metric tons of greenhouse gases, equivalent to the emissions of hundreds of coal-fired power plants. Open burning of plastic waste releases toxic chemicals, further affecting air quality and public health. Experts emphasize the need for systemic changes in consumption and production systems to address plastic pollution. Detroit Future City’s (DFC) latest report, “Making the Middle Class: Leveraging Detroit’s Neighborhoods to Build a Middle-Class City,” highlights the importance of increasing the city’s middle-class population to support long-term economic sustainability. Key findings include: - Detroit has seen a net population increase of 2,000 residents, but the city has lost 67,000 residents since 2012. - Income, education, housing, and neighborhood quality are cited as critical factors influencing residents’ decisions to stay. - Income disparities persist, with Black and Latino/Hispanic populations earning less than their white counterparts, who are increasingly achieving higher education degrees. The report builds on previous studies, including the 2019 report focused on growing Detroit’s African American middle class.
