Why do we use natural gas to support the electric grid as we transition to a future powered by renewables? Think about a hybrid car. 🚘 Much of the time, SRP relies on renewables and batteries to provide power to our customers, similar to how my hybrid uses electricity for everyday errands. However, there are times when we need more power than renewable energy can provide—like on a hot, cloudy day or, in our hybrid analogy, an unexpected trip to my mother-in-law’s in far North Scottsdale. In these moments, access to gas ensures I get to my mother-in-law’s when she needs me. And for SRP, it means we keep the lights on and the A/C running on a hot Arizona summer day.

We are the Champions … of Sustainability! Salt River Project recognized Mesa as one of 12 businesses that are driving sustainable change. Mesa was applauded for our proactive approach to reducing our carbon footprint and enhancing the quality of life for our residents. Mesa was the only municipality on the list. In 2024, Mesa received over $265,000 in rebates from SRP for energy efficiency projects that included lighting at Red Mountain ballfields, the nation’s first all-electric fire truck and a DC fast charger for the fire truck. We are proud to be recognized as a Champion of Sustainability for the strides we are making to build a more sustainable community, and we will continue to work towards meeting our goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.
