The ideal candidate will have 2-3 years of experience providing direct services to high-risk transitional age youth (TAY) and working in the homeless services industry. 🎙SPY Squad, our youth advocacy group, had an empowering experience attending the West Coast Convening, a two-day conference in San Diego. This event brought together youth service providers and advocates from across the West Coast to share insights, discuss challenges, and collaborate on solutions to youth homelessness in a post-pandemic world. Through SPY Squad, our youth gain a powerful voice and the chance to drive change, not just for themselves, but for their peers facing similar struggles 🗣 A special shout-out to Darren T., our dedicated Education and Employment Specialist, who chaperoned SPY Squad Chairman Daniel R. Daniel was thrilled by the opportunity to connect with others who have lived experience, forging bonds with peers from multiple agencies. It was an inspiring experience that will surely fuel even more change!

It was such an honor to give back to our local community to provide Thanksgiving Meals, including turkeys and boxes of dry goods to over 140 families in Venice 🦃 🌽 On Saturday, November 23rd, SPY's Outreach and the SPY Squad team collaborated with H.E.L.P.E.R. Foundation and Westside Food Bank to make this holiday season warmer and brighter. Thank you to The Department of Mental Health, Community Resource Center, Chrysalis, LA LGBT Center, St. Joseph’s Center, and Step Up on Second all tabled to share their resources for those who stopped by. And a huge thank you to the Rotary Club of Woodland Hills, Westside Food Bank, and any others who donated food to give out for this event.

“We need supportive, wraparound services, allowing youth to find housing on their own terms because frankly, it can be quite traumatic to take someone off the street and put them right into their own home,” said Dexter O’Connell, Director of Youth Policy and Advocacy, “that can be a very difficult transition for folks who may have never been on a lease, paid utility bills, or don’t understand how to do all the adult stuff.” At the end of October, Dexter was on a panel called "Housing Is Not Enough: The Need for Trauma-Informed Services" at The Village Family Services' 2024 Summit. The panelists discussed the critical need for a trauma-informed and person-centered approach to delivering all types of services, and empowering young people to advocate for themselves in partnership with adults and services organizations.
