About us
Safe and Sound Schools: A Sandy Hook Initiative is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing parents and school communities the tools and resources necessary to ensure school safety. On Dec. 14, 2012, a tragic act of violence took the lives of 20 children and six adult staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Two of the children belonged to Michele Gay and Alissa Parker. In honor of their daughters, Josephine and Emilie, Gay and Parker founded Safe and Sound Schools to advocate for better school security and safety. Their mission is to advocate for improved school security and safety in order to protect children and teachers. For more information about Safe and Sound Schools, follow us and receive updates on what you can do to keep our children’s schools safe.

📰Recently, our colleagues at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, the U.S. Secret Service, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships (#CP3) had the privilege of participating in a panel discussion at the Safe and Sound Schools Summit about the critical role of cross-sector collaboration in school safety and security. Safe And Sound Schools is an organization dedicated to empowering safer school communities with education, resources, and programs for crisis prevention, response, and recovery. Check out the post below to learn more. #DHS #SafeAndSoundSchools #SafeAndSoundSummits
Day 1 of the Eastern West Virginia Safety Summit got off to a fantastic start! The day began with welcoming remarks from Michele Gay, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Safe and Sound Schools, and Dr. Ryan Saxe (Ed.D.), Superintendent of Berkeley County Schools WV, who set the stage for a day of meaningful discussions and collaboration. The first keynote, A Community-Focused Approach to Violence Prevention by Dr. Frank Straub, explored the challenges and opportunities of implementing a holistic behavioral threat assessment model to support high-risk students and their caregivers. Next, the expert panel discussion, The Power of Partnership, brought together an esteemed group of experts: Dr. Amy Grosso, PhD from Raptor Technologies, LLC, Lindsay Burton from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), Jin Kim, Retired Special Agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Michael Kapuscinski from the U.S. Secret Service National Threat Assessment Center (NTAC), and Kareem S. from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Moderated by Michele Gay, this panel highlighted the critical role of cross-sector collaboration in addressing violence prevention and fostering safer schools and communities. Dr. Joseph McKenna’s keynote, Pathways for Prevention: Changing the Trajectory, introduced attendees to one of Safe and Sound Schools' signature programs, emphasizing how Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) can be used to establish safer, more supportive learning environments. Michele Gay’s, Perspectives in Prevention: Lessons Learned from the Sandy Hook School Tragedy, provided a deeply personal and powerful message. Michele shared her story and the enduring lessons she continues to advocate in honor of her daughter, Josephine. The day concluded with Community Conversations, offering a collaborative space for participants to exchange ideas, explore practical solutions, and build connections with local leaders, educators, law enforcement representatives, and community advocates. Thank you to everyone who joined us for an incredible first day. We look forward to sharing insights from Day 2 tomorrow! #SafeAndSoundSummits
