Dengue cases are on the rise globally, with Latin America and Southeast Asia experiencing record-breaking outbreaks. At the same time, diabetes—a significant risk factor for severe dengue—is projected to affect over 1 billion people by 2050. The intersection of these two health challenges could result in increased severe dengue cases and dengue-related mortality, particularly in countries with a high burden of both diseases. In a newly published Commentary in the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene’s #InternationalHealth journal, RTI International experts Dr. Donal Bisanzio and Dr. Richard Reithinger, alongside Cassia Fernanda Estofolete (Faculty of Medicine of São José do Rio Preto), explore the complex interplay between these conditions and its implications for health systems. They highlight the urgent need for integrated strategies to mitigate this dual burden and its socioeconomic impact. 📖Find out more on the insights and policy recommendations by reading the full Commentary: https://lnkd.in/dz5QdjBn

Undernutrition remains a significant challenge in Ethiopia, contributing to nearly one-third of child deaths and causing substantial GDP loss each year. Currently, more than 39% of children under-five are stunted, 22% are underweight, and 11% are wasted. Maternal undernutrition is equally concerning, with 20% of women classified as underweight and 50% experiencing folate deficiencies. These challenges hinder Ethiopia’s inclusive growth goals and efforts to improve maternal and child health. Through the Feed the Future Ethiopia Community Nutrition Activity, RTI spearheads research and evaluation efforts, conducting baseline assessments, developing a multisectoral research agenda, and ensuring cross-sectoral collaboration. We also work to align the project with the Feed the Future Ethiopia Transforming Agriculture activity, fostering efficiencies and continuity between nutrition and agriculture interventions. Led by FHI 360 in partnership with other key organizations, this five-year project addresses maternal and child undernutrition by improving high-impact nutrition practices, increasing access to health and nutrition services, and strengthening collaboration among stakeholders Learn more: https://ow.ly/tN0W50Ur0gH
