Developing the lowest cost and least complex fusion energy technology for the production of industrial heat and power.

About us

Realta Fusion is an early-stage spin-out from the University of Wisconsin-Madison developing the lowest capital and least complex path to commercially competitive fusion energy. We are applying advances in super-conducting materials, plasma physics, and computing power to a simple linear fusion reactor configuration. These advances allow for a much lower capex power plant, utilizing abundant fuel sources to provide a new, zero-carbon source of heat and power.

We've invested in Realta Fusion, a Wisconsin-based startup developing modular compact fusion technology to meet the surging energy demands of our increasingly connected and advanced world. As energy needs skyrocket -- driven by industrial growth, advancements in AI, and more powerful computing -- the urgency for diversified, clean, scalable solutions has never been greater. Fusion technology holds the promise of transforming energy as we know it, and Realta’s compact magnetic mirror technology, rooted in key research from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, offers flexible deployment, making them a game-changer for industries like manufacturing, data centers, and beyond. Realta highlights the power of Wisconsin’s larger ecosystem -- where visionary entrepreneurs, advanced research, a strong manufacturing backbone, and investment from home (#TitletownTech, Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) and the coast (Khosla Ventures) are coming together to tackle one of the world’s most pressing challenges. We're excited to back Kieran Furlong and the entire Realta team as they lead the charge in realizing fusion energy’s vast potential. • Cloud computing and fusion energy have a symbiotic relationship. Right now, developers of fusion energy technology (like us!) need massive amounts of computing power and AI/ML to run plasma simulations and to design functioning fusion power plants. The huge data centers needed to power voracious AI engines and crunch all of humanity’s data will demand zero carbon fusion energy alongside intermittent renewables. Realta Fusion’s Sam Frank and Kieran Furlong spoke this week at the Amazon Web Services (AWS) #awsreInvent conference in Las Vegas. As one of the inaugural Compute for Climate fellows, Realta Fusion has worked closely with AWS to be the first company to run the extremely compute-intensive particle-in-cell simulation in the cloud. Thanks to Lisbeth Kaufman, Mark Sauceda, Faraz Ahmad and everyone at AWS who helped us achieve this notable first and for the invitation to present it to the cloud computing community. #fusionenergy

  • Great to have this Clean Air Task Force report featured in Baku at COP29 Azerbaijan. Realta Fusion's work with Amazon Web Services (AWS) is highlighted in a case study in the report. A big shout out to our lead Computational Physicist Sam Frank for spearheading this work. Quote from the report: Realta used this support to become the first fusion company to execute a general-purpose Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulation on cloud resources for their WHAM machine, using Amazon Web Services (AWS)’s cloud computing platform. “We run PIC simulations because they let us define orbits within plasmas, which is key to studying stability— something that simpler models can’t do. PIC is absolutely massive amounts of compute... AWS was able to provide the capacity we needed to push forward with our simulations” explained Realta’s CEO Kieran Furlong.

As the world grapples with the growing climate challenge, the need for clean, firm power has become apparent. Between the rising demand for data centers and the explosion of artificial intelligence (AI), there is a growing need for energy sources capable of providing abundant and consistent zero-carbon electricity. Coupled with advancements in AI and high performance computing (HPC), #fusion energy has the potential to transform the global energy landscape. A new report from Clean Air Task Force explores how AI and HPC are accelerating fusion energy development in key areas, including materials selection, high-temperature superconductors, inertial fusion energy, tritium breeding, and advanced diagnostics. With real-world examples featuring 16 case studies, the report showcases how AI and HPC are already driving progress in the fusion sector. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/eTrHkCzB

Nice to have our "Tootsie Roll" fusion device mentioned in the The New York Times last week, along with my Realta Fusion co-founder Cary Forest! The article provides some good content on the distinction between fission and fusion too. This is important for countries where nuclear fission is outlawed - like my home country of Ireland which also happens to be a MASSIVE hub for data centers. (>20% of electricity consumption) "Fusion is the opposite of the fission process that powers today’s nuclear plants. Atoms don’t split; they weld together. The basic fuel isn’t uranium, but hydrogen extracted from seawater. There’s no threat of runaway reactions, and the radioactive waste it leaves behind is less dangerous. Making it happen, and controlling it, is just much, much trickier." https://lnkd.in/gj7nhPxv (Subscriber paywall)

  • From Realta Fusion’s founding, we have committed to open-science development. By publishing our scientific progress in peer-reviewed journals, we invite the plasma physics research community and broader public to check our work and follow our progress.  Congratulations to Sam Frank and Jesse Viola with Realta Fusion, Yuri Petrov with CompX, and the whole Realta Team who successfully delivered Realta’s first technical Department of Energy milestone! In just one year, the Realta Fusion team condensed the advancements made in the past 40 years of fusion research into our first-of-a-kind RealTwin™ integrated computational model for Hammir, our magnetic mirror fusion pilot plant. Their findings, "Integrated modeling of equilibrium and transport in axisymmetric magnetic mirror fusion devices" have been submitted to the Journal of Plasma Physics and are now publicly available: https://lnkd.in/g4eereaV. This paper lays out the physics basis for Hammir, our magnetic mirror fusion pilot plant. Hammir uses bleeding edge technologies to revitalize one of the leading fusion concepts of the 20th century. This will deliver cost competitive heat and/or power across a range of scales from datacenters to large industrial users. #RealTwin #datacenters #magneticmirror #Hammir
