We are pleased to announce that Plant has been awarded the contract to renovate the Cottle and Lester Historic Ranch in San Jose. RRM Design Group is the Architect of Record, and Architectural Resources Group, with whom we have completed dozens of projects, is the Historic Consultant. Part of the original Rancho Santa Teresa Mexican Land Grant, the property was purchased by Edward Cottle in 1864 and remained in his family for several generations. Plant will provide repairs and stabilization to the Cottle House, Japanese House, pumphouse, water tower, and water tank. Once finished, the work will preserve the historic structures and create new amenities and upgrades to improve the visitor experience at Martial Cottle Park. Preconstruction is currently underway. Construction is slated to begin in May of 2025 with an anticipated completion date of August. Congratulations to all involved in this winning effort, including Vice President/Construction Manager Darcy Narduzzi, Senior Estimator Mike Cashman, and Assistant Project Manager Juan Tajtaj!

Over the past few months, Plant Construction Company, LP, Perkins&Will, Holmes US, Page & Turnbull, Bigge Crane and Rigging Co., Bayview Services Inc., and Pullman Services have turned close collaboration into reality. The team successfully erected the construction personnel hoist (CPH), made structural connections, and fabricated portals that enable work to begin within University of California, College of the Law, San Francisco (formerly UC Hastings)'s 100 McAllister building in San Francisco's Academic Village. The CPH ultimately preserves the century-old landmark's historic fabric while allowing for expedited installation, ensuring the existing interior elevators could be decommissioned on schedule. This video highlights its installation process.

This is a fascination read and deep dive into the ongoing work for the University of California, College of the Law, San Francisco (formerly UC Hastings) 100 McAllister project.
For the third installment of our 100 McAllister storytelling series, our architects at Perkins&Will outline the design vision for the renovated building, the complex constraints that must be considered, and the creative approach to working within those constraints to improve and create meaningful spaces that will greatly enhance the experience and resilience of 100 McAllister. Give it a read below. We will dive even deeper into the topic of design innovation within constraints in 2025. Before we go up, we must come down! Since September 10th, Plant Construction Company, LP's team has been in a dead sprint to prepare the historic, 28-story 100 McAllister project at University of California, College of the Law, San Francisco (formerly UC Hastings) to receive the construction hoist from Bigge Crane and Rigging Co. In just two months, with major input from Page & Turnbull, loading bays were created with minimal impact to the facade by Bayview Services Inc. and Pullman Services. Structural steel anchor points were designed by Holmes US to avoid damaging the terra cotta brick as a critical part of preserving San Francisco's Academic Village.

As work progresses on the Japantown Peace Plaza, Celtic Scaffolding completes the shoring and custom scaffolding around the Peace Pagoda, a five-tiered concrete stupa originally created and donated in the mid-1960s as a gift from Osaka, San Francisco’s sister city in Japan. Courtney, Inc. is on-site installing hot fluid-applied waterproofing over approximately 32,000 square feet of the plaza's structural deck. Demolition is approximately 85% complete, as well as the salvage of historical elements such as stone water basins and benches, plaques, signage, boulders, and cherry and bonsai trees. Next steps involve the seismic renovation of the historic pagoda, which includes foundation reinforcement, FRP wrap around existing column piers, steel tendons, waterproofing, and paint of all concrete surfaces. #construction #renovation #infrastructure #japantown #pagoda #scaffolding

The key to enabling major work to start at University of California, College of the Law, San Francisco (formerly UC Hastings)'s 100 McAllister renovation in the San Francisco's Academic Village is the installation of the dual car construction personnel hoist. To do so, Plant collaborated with Holmes US over the course of several months to design a structural attachment to the building that avoided damaging the historic brick of the nearly 100-year-old building. In conjunction with Bayview Services Inc. and Pullman Services, the team removed historic windows, copper panels, and concrete spandrel panels to allow for custom-fabricated anchor points to be bolted to the concrete deck at eight different levels. At two locations on levels 22 and 24, since the building steps back, major frames that cantilever out were welded to the existing structure. All of these elements were designed to be installed without a crane and components sized to fit in the existing passenger elevators. Once the work is completed this week, hoist installation will begin.
