He received a Master of Science in Transportation Management from Brooklyn Polytechnic NYU. He was a proud member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity and of Mensa International. Daniel fulfilled his dream of contributing to the 1969 moon landing when he was employed by the Grumman Aircraft Corporation. He then worked as a teacher for the New York City Department (formerly Board) of Education. He later joined the New York Metropolitan Transit Authority, with which he proudly worked on the post-9/11 infrastructure mapping project. Daniel was an avid reader and swimmer. He was a member of the Sheepshead Bay Yacht Club. He was a member of the Space Commerce Roundtable; of URISA, a geographic information systems (GIS) group; and of GISMO and NYCARC. He often presented speeches about space exploration, including for fans of Star Trek. Daniel is survived by his wife, Catherine Ann (Scanlon) McHugh, of 52 years. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Walter Scanlon, and his sisters-in-law, Alice (Dennis) Scanlon and Teresa (Thomas) Scanlon, as well as by his many cousins, nieces and nephews. His wit and wisdom will be greatly missed.

GISMO Member Appointed to National Geospatial Advisory Committee I am happy to announce that Alan Leidner a long time GISMO member and current Treasurer and Board Member, has been appointed to the Federal Geographic Data Committee’s (FGDC) National Geospatial Advisory Committee (NGAC). NGAC provides advice, including recommendations on the development of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI), and guidance to the FGDC whose members include the GIOs of federal agencies and whose purpose is to direct federal and national geospatial efforts. As an NGAC member, Alan will be in position to advocate for geospatial policies that advance GIS in NYC and in the U.S. generally. Alan was quick to acknowledge that his appointment was made possible in large measure by the work of GISMO members over the past 35 years in helping to build GIS in NYC, and by GISMO’s contributions at the local, state, national, and international levels. Alan also wanted me to mention his gratitude to GISMO founder Jack Eichenbaum for his visionary leadership. We are very excited for Alan and look forward to any opportunities this may bring us to continue building GISMO as well as the New York State GIS Association. Congratulations Alan! Sincerely, Dara Mendeloff GISMO Interim President

Very cool feature on GIS and Syracuse, NY!
The City of Syracuse Department of Public Works responds to winter storms with a comprehensive and transparent approach to snow removal, using real-time GIS technology to solve operational challenges and ensure efficient service delivery. This story by Adam Carnow relates how this approach took hold and was emulated to improve the efficiency of trash pickup. https://lnkd.in/g8_bv6pT Conor Patrick Muldoon, Joanna Bailey, Stephanie Hower, Cameron Morey
