Metro-North Railroad
Rail Transportation
Serving the people of New York and Connecticut with pride.
About us
Founded in 1983 when the MTA assumed control of Conrail commuter operations in the states of New York and Connecticut, Metro-North Railroad’s roots can be traced back to the New York & Harlem Railroad, which began in 1832 as a horse-car line in lower Manhattan. Today, with 384 route miles and 775 miles of track, Metro-North’s territory covers seven counties in New York State--Dutchess, Putnam, Westchester, Bronx, New York (Manhattan), Rockland, and Orange-and two counties in the state of Connecticut--New Haven and Fairfield. Three main lines east of the Hudson River--the Hudson, the Harlem, and the New Haven -- operate out of Grand Central Terminal in New York City. Two lines west of the Hudson River--the Port Jervis and the Pascack Valley--operate out of New Jersey Transit's terminal in Hoboken, N.J., and connect with service out of Penn Station, NY via the Secaucus Transfer. The Hudson Line extends 74 miles from Grand Central Terminal to Poughkeepsie; the Harlem, 82 miles to Wassaic; and the New Haven, which also has three branch lines--the New Canaan, Danbury, and Waterbury--72 miles to New Haven. The Port Jervis Line runs 95 miles from Hoboken to Port Jervis, with 30 of those miles in New Jersey; the Pascack Valley Line extends 31 miles from Hoboken to Spring Valley, 25 of those miles being in New Jersey. Total square mileage of the service territory is approximately 2,701 miles. The railroad also manages the Hudson Rail Link feeder bus service in the Bronx, and The Haverstraw-Ossining and Newburgh-Beacon ferries, all of which connect with the Hudson Line.

As we approach the end of another year, we’re looking back and reflecting on some accomplishments—2024 was an eventful year for the MTA! 🥳 2024 was a year of big anniversaries: The subway turned 120 years old, Long Island Rail Road hit 190, Metro-North Railroad's Hudson Line turned 175, and two of our biggest bridges—the Verrazzano and the Bronx-Whitestone—celebrated their 60th and 85th birthdays, respectively. 🚗 Congestion pricing became a reality: In the spring, the MTA Board approved a tolling structure for the Central Business District Tolling Program, and in the fall, Governor Kathy Hochul proposed a phased-in approach that begins Jan. 5. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/enfeHhXq 🟢 This year we launched OMNY for both NYC students and Reduced-Fare program members, offering brand new benefits (like 24/7 free rides for students) and an easier way for all customers to move throughout the city. 🛗 Stations across our network got a lift! Long Island Rail Road’s Babylon Branch & Metro-North's Harlem Line both saw 3 stations apiece become fully ADA accessible. We made significant progress on the subway, making 9 stations (including hubs like 14 St & Queensboro Plaza) accessible in 2024. 🎉 Access-A-Ride hit a ridership milestone, with a one-day record of 38,800 scheduled rides on September 4! This increased ridership aligns with our dedication to enhance customer satisfaction by improving on-time performance and reducing no-shows. 🆕 It was the year of the R211! Their debut on the Staten Island Railway marked the first new train cars in the borough in more than 50 years. C train riders, meanwhile, can ride our first sets of open gangway railcars. 🎂 This year, celebrated the 1 year anniversary of Grand Central Madison! It was also named 2024’s Most Beautiful Passenger Rail Station by UNESCO. 🏆 We showed our love for New York’s sports champs: We caught Grimace fever on the 7 train during the Mets’ run in the MLB playoffs, and after the NY Liberty won the WNBA Championship, the Liberty Av station in Brooklyn got a sign to honor the team’s colossal achievement. 🚌 We’re charging into the future with 60 new electric buses that will go into service in Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island! We also partnered with NY Power Authority to install 17 charging points at Grand Avenue Bus Depot. 📖 MTA Arts & Design celebrated the release of “Contemporary Art Underground,” a new book highlighting more than 100 public art commissions. 💳 The MetroCard will be retired soon, and we sent it off with a bang with commemorative cards in collaboration with icons like Olivia Rodrigo, Victoria’s Secret, and Instagram. We also unveiled the next phase of commemorative fare media with an OMNY-equipped Barilla pasta box! 🚇 And as always, we’re most proud of the fact that billions of people ride our subways, buses, and commuter railroads every year. Here’s to a billion more in 2025! Read the full list: https://lnkd.in/ekTn_rZa
