About us

In 2017, a group of long-time conservation advocates and friends from Las Cruces, New Mexico came together. Tired of being tokenized in conservation and outdoor recreation spaces, they worked to create opportunities for Latinx/Hispanic borderland community members to engage with, access, and learn about public lands and waters. Two years later, Nuestra Tierra Conservation Project formally established itself as a 501(c)(3) non-profit and began to spearhead state and national-level policy work.

  • 🎉 GOOD NEWS!🎉 In his final days in office, President Biden has officially designated Chuckwalla and Sáttítla Highlands National Monuments in California! These efforts were led by Tribes & broadly supported by elected officials, businesses, hunters and anglers, scientists, veterans, & local community members. Chuckwalla National Monument 📌Located: South of Joshua Tree National Park Seven Tribes called for the protection of this cultural landscape. The monument will honor Tribal sovereignty, boost the local economy, and help ensure access to nature for local residents. Sáttítla Highlands National Monument 📌Located: Northeastern California Since time immemorial, the Pit River Nation has regarded Sáttítla as sacred, and this area remains a spiritual center for the Pit River and Modoc Nations as well as for surrounding Tribal Peoples. The monument also protects critical water resources for millions of Californians. … During our #MobilizingForMonuments Road Trip with Flickr, The Conservation Alliance, and Rivian back in Fall of 2023, Chuckwalla was a stop on our quest to advocate for the permanent protection of US National Monuments under the threat from destructive resource development. Nuestra Tierra Conservation Project thanks President Joe Biden, Secretary Deb Haaland, Senator Alex Padilla & Congressman Raul Ruiz, MD for their work with community to ensure that current and future generations have access to public lands!

  • 🚨 CAJA DEL RIO NEEDS OUR VOICE🚨 This historic New Mexican landscape - home to Indigenous tribes and Pueblos, thousands of petroglyphs, and vital wildlife corridors - is under threat. Where burrowing owls nest in ancient cliffs and elk herds roam freely through cacti forests, this 106,883-acre treasure Southwest of Santa Fe deserves National Monument status. But illegal dumping and mining are putting it all at risk. Join New Mexico’s Congressional delegation in calling for permanent protection through the Antiquities Act. Here are some ways YOU can take action: + Share your stories, experiences, and photos of the Caja - and tag leaders and decision-makers like President Joe Biden  @POTUS  and Secretary of the Interior, Deb Haaland @SecretaryDebHaaland + Like/follow and reshare content by Caja del Rio Coalition  - a broad and diverse group of Pueblo, Hispanic, conservation, outdoor recreation, and community organizations dedicated to ensuring proper protection and management of Caja del Rio. + Use hashtags like #ProtectCajaDelRio and #NewMexicoPublicLands + Stay up to date via https://lnkd.in/gwyePyYD ¡Juntos podemos! The power of community can get us there.

  • 💬🧡 A message to YOU from our Executive Director: "I’m feeling incredibly grateful for everyone who has supported our dream at the Nuestra Tierra Conservation Project. What started as an idea sketched on a napkin with one of my best friends, has grown into a movement to reimagine 21st-century conservation. Our mission remains clear: FORWARD is our battle cry. The Nuestra Tierra crew is working tirelessly to ensure historically excluded communities not only have access to our incredible outdoor spaces, but also have a seat at the table in public lands and water management decisions. There's so much good work ahead of us. Together, we're building a more inclusive outdoor future! So, happy holidays and happy new year — but then let’s get back to it and keep pushing ahead!" 🙏- Ángel Damian Soto Pena Executive Director, Nuestra Tierra Conservation Project.

  • Have you heard? 🎉 Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior, Deb Haaland announced on Tuesday, December 17 the designations of 19 new #NationalHistoricalLandmarks. We’re spotlighting 3 standout sites that showcase America’s diverse heritage: Summit Camp 📌 California The largest Chinese railroad worker camp from the Transcontinental Railroad era (1865-1869), highlighting the crucial contributions of Chinese immigrants in building America. Charleston Cigar Factory 📌 South Carolina Site of a pivotal 1945-1946 strike led by African American women workers, showcasing the intersection of labor rights and civil rights activism. Loudoun County Courthouse 📌 Virginia Location of the pivotal 1933-1934  Crawford trial that transformed civil rights law. The case led to Charles Hamilton Houston becoming the NAACP's first special counsel, launching their strategic legal campaign to end segregation. These designations help tell a more complete story of American history, and reflect Secretary Haaland’s commitment to preserving sites of struggle, triumph, and cultural significance for future generations. For the full list of NHL designations, visit www.nps.gov 🌐

  • HISTORY IS MADE! 🏛✨ President Biden has designated the Frances Perkins National Monument, honoring FDR's Secretary of Labor and the first female Cabinet member. Perkins was the architect behind Social Security, minimum wage, and many worker protections we still rely on today. Since 1906, presidents have used the Antiquities Act to protect places that tell America's story - from the Grand Canyon to civil rights landmarks. Because when we preserve these places, we keep their stories and impact alive. This is Biden's 13th monument designation. Along with this announcement, five new National Historic Landmarks were named, including sites significant to women's labor rights, Black history, and LGBTQ+ history. Thank you, President Biden and U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary Haaland 🙏. By protecting these places, we ensure future generations can connect with the people and moments that made America what it is today. Learn more at: www.whitehouse.gov
