It was energizing to witness my Northwest Maritime colleagues, Jake Beattie, Robin Mills, Katelyn Kean, and friends across many organizations share their brilliance at this year's Teaching with Small Boats Alliance conference. Hosted at Mystic Seaport Museum, I gained much wisdom from sitting on the participating side this year—as both a panelist and a first-time conference-wide facilitator! Many sessions wove together the themes and threads that connect youth and adults to hands-on skills through water-based activities and boatshops, but, even more importantly, into spaces that empower individuals to be their best selves within the collective. Workforce development discussions made meaningful strides in linking K-12 students with certifications that are both regionally relevant and nationally aligned, but also legitimize the learner's experience embedded within immersive, hands-on programs. New Blog Post! "Port Townsend Maritime Academy’s (PTMA) Class of 2025 have taken to the stage in style, being the largest class size in PTMA history. Our students come from across the western shores of Puget Sound, and meet together every morning at the Northwest Maritime Center. Students began the year by attending a festival—the Wooden Boat Festival to be specific—organized and hosted by Northwest Maritime as a community engagement event. It was the perfect opportunity for students to learn more about the breadth and depth of the Maritime Community and the industries involved. Maritime High School 12th graders exploring the sea with Washington State Ferries

As the need for more hands in maritime increases, the industry is investing in the next generation to ready them for careers as merchant mariners, marine scientists, and engineers. Glosten is just one of many organizations in the Pacific Northwest supporting curriculum development at Highline Public Schools' Maritime High School (MHS), where students get to explore different areas of the marine industry through hands-on learning that prepares them for college and the maritime trades. "Both Harbor School and Maritime High School offer a blend of instruction that is both college prep and vocational. Students can move on to college or even maritime academies. Or they can go straight to a good job. “How often can you go to a high school, get college credit and certifications so you can go out at 19 years old and make $50,000 a year,” said Jamilla Gordon, the Maritime High School principal. “That’s unheard of, right? I want to ensure that kids know about it.”"
