  • “The 5 days post Helene were the craziest, hardest Outward Bound days of most of our careers and lives, yet as I’m writing this, I find little parts of myself grateful. Grateful for my community and the ways we showed up. Grateful to remember how inspirational our students are. Grateful for the Outward Bound community for their unwavering support. Grateful for the forest service for being essential in us being able to leave basecamp. Grateful that WNC showed up in such a powerful way after such an awful tragic thing. Grateful to learn that I could, and I can.” NCOBS Instructor Emma shares the story of how over 50 staff members and students supported one another by embodying the pillars of self-reliance, physical fitness, craftsmanship, and above all, compassion while sheltering in place at Table Rock Base Camp during Tropical Storm Helene. Visit ncobs.org/blog to read more about the resilience and tenacity of NCOBS students and staff during the days following the storm. • Our Outward Bound Professional crew had the opportunity to join GenOne Charlotte for their first-ever staff retreat at the beautiful Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens in May. It was a rewarding day filled with team building, challenges, and meaningful reflection. GenOne Charlotte is an inspiring nonprofit dedicated to partnering with talented, first-generation students from underserved communities and helping them successfully navigate into and through college. We are so grateful to partner with this impactful organization!

At GenOne, our supportive culture is key for our team members. Each of us helps each other navigate the challenges of building a nonprofit, and everyone uplifts one another through our unique strengths. Each team member has felt the space and room to contribute their ideas, lead where they are strong, and experience growth through a devotion to life-long learning. The impact this team has been able to make over the last four years is outstanding; and it has required continuously re-orienting ourselves. It’s why we were excited to launch our first ever staff retreat in partnership with North Carolina Outward Bound School last spring, a tradition we’re excited to continue. Outward Bound intentionally created hands-on activities that helped us dive deeper to understand our unique strengths and areas of growth as individuals and a team. Their work went so much further than any personality survey could. It pushed us to communicate clearly, rely on each other, trust each other’s leadership, practice active listening, and implement critical reflection. They also challenged us to learn map skills and navigate an unknown trail system to get all of us around the Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens – an excellent metaphor for what it is like constantly navigating the uncertain and fast changing landscape of non-profit work. A deep and sincere thank you to Outward Bound for their intentional facilitation – and affordable professional development rates :) We highly recommend them!
