“In war, truth is the first casualty.” Aeschylus’s well-known maxim proved a more than fitting opening for In-Soo Radstake’s newest documentary film, ‘’Selling a Colonial War”, which was selected as the closing film of the African Diaspora International Film Festival in New York City. The documentary investigates the Netherlands' war fought from 1945 to 1949 against the newly declared Republic of Indonesia. Words matter, in war and in peace. Radstake’s film carefully examines how the original framing device of a “police action” was able to dominate public perception for decades. The screening, followed by a lively discussion and Q&A, offered essential perspectives on history, colonial narratives, race and power—very timely topics indeed. Dutch Culture USA is proud to be part of this year’s festival through the FUTURE 400 program, an initiative that honors 400 years of Dutch-New York history by creating space for dialogue and collaboration around culture and shared heritage. Explore a focused exhibition that chronicles the evolution of the artist’s signature abstract style. “When [Mondrian] tries to explain what his art is about, he says, ‘I don’t want pictures, I want to find things out.’ We’re just so very lucky that we know his findings because they are preserved in his pictures.” —Mariet Westermann, curator and Director and CEO, Solomon R. Dutch documentary Front Row had its world premiere at DOC NYC documentary film festival this week. If you get a chance: do not miss this powerful story of resilience, the importance of culture in time of great adversity, ballet as a source of pride, strength and joy. Award-winning Dutch film maker Miriam Guttmann joined forces with producer Sarah Jessica Parker to tell the story of the United Ukrainian Ballet: sixty exiled Ukrainian dancers based in the Netherlands take the world’s stages by storm. But there’s a new crew member: a soldier learning to dance with two prosthetic legs. The documentary conveyed an important message, articulated by veteran Oleksandr Teren Budko during the Q&A: culture is often called soft power, but it’s not less muscular, it is just fighting on a different front. Head of Culture USA Pauline Genee joined the screening, followed by a Q&A with film subject director Miriam Guttmann, executive producer Sarah Jessica Parker, and protagonists Oleksandr Teren Budko and Alexis Tutunnique, amongst others. DOC NY takes place until December 1, also online: https://lnkd.in/gWstDEij
