WUI-NITY 4 report is now published, packed with information on Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) evacuation simulations. Developed through international collaboration, the WUI-NITY modeling tool now includes microscopic traffic modeling with SUMO, the k-PERIL probabilistic trigger buffer model, and a streamlined user interface. These enhancements offer deeper insights into evacuation behaviors and the impact of wildfire smoke on driving speeds. In addition, detailed VR experiments provide a richer understanding of human responses in wildfire scenarios. Additionally, the report introduces innovative social media data mining techniques to analyze evacuation behaviors, enhancing our understanding of how people react and move during wildfires. Learn more about WUI-NITY at the NFPA website. https://lnkd.in/eYmGWy68 The model will be made available for download soon. #WildfireSafety #EvacuationModeling #EmergencyPlanning #WUINITY4 #VRSimulations #TrafficModeling #FireSafety #PublicSafety

As we close out 2024, we want to take a moment to celebrate the incredible year of Kitchen Table Talks hosted by Karen Berard-Reed and Chelsea Rubadou! Each month, they brought together amazing speakers to share insights, challenges, and innovative ideas in Community Risk Reduction (CRR). It's been a year of growth and learning, from CRR data brainstorming to wildfire strategies, firefighter health, and more. We thank our guest speakers and everyone who participated in these conversations. If you have ideas or would like to join them in 2025, drop a comment or email crr@nfpa.org! #NFPA #KitchenTable #CRR #FireSafety
Once a month, we gather around the (virtual) kitchen table and share successes, challenges, ideas, and big questions all pertaining to community risk reduction. I want to take a moment as we close out 2024 to remember and toast to all our guest speakers this past year... In January we brainstormed CRR data for the development of NERIS with Tom Jenkins. In February we learned about the statewide CRR initiatives in Wisconsin. In March the Jessicas of Fairfax shared their fun, innovative data analysis and communication tactics Jessica L. A. Jessica Handoko. In April we got a sneak peek at some amazing programs that were later presented in full at NFPA's Conference Selena Silva. In May, Grand Rapids, Michigan discussed what's next as they approach the 10-year mark on previous smoke alarm installation programs. In June Jeremy Mitchell chatted with us about utilizing CRR as a fire fighter health and safety initiative. In July we handed the reins to Kim S. and Sylvia Peace and they facilitated a lively roundtable about Older Adult Falls. In August, with the opening of NFPA's Conference call for proposals, we joined forces with Michele Steinberg and Kelly Ransdell to discuss what makes a fantastic CRR, wildfire, and/or public education conference session. In September we discussed the relationship between CRR and wildfire mitigation strategies with Megan Fitzgerald-McGowan and Michele Steinberg. In October we learned about a Florida Youth Emergency Teen Program that merges fire service, emergency management, and a local 4-H club, with Rachel Roberts. In November Peg Paul discussed economic incentives related to CRR initiatives, using the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition as a shining example. And just a couple days ago, we celebrated December with our friends to the north Benoit Ferland and Yan Cuillerier, who discussed how policy in Quebec influences their CRR work, and how that's led to measurable impacts. Karen Berard-Reed and I are excited to build out the 2025 Kitchen Table slate, so if you have any ideas, speakers, or big questions to propose drop us a comment or email! And if you'd like to join us, email crr @ nfpa. org to get on our mailing list. NFPA Thanks to each and every one of you who makes this monthly event a fun and engaging conversation. I've learned so much from you all. Have a safe and happy holiday season! See you next year 😁

With Notre Dame's timely reopening last week, we’re reflecting on the fire risks older buildings face during renovations. Many historic buildings, like Notre Dame, lack modern fire protection, leaving them vulnerable during restoration work.
