Since 2017, at least two men with serious mental illness have died while in New Hampshire state custody — after being restrained by correctional officers. In one case, the state is charging one of its own with homicide. But in another, the state denies any wrongdoing. Advocates say these incidents highlight fundamental problems with how New Hampshire cares for people in custody, and responds when they’re in crisis.

NHPR’s “The 13th Step” podcast – finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in audio reporting and winner of the duPont-Colombia Award – is back with an update: A federal judge has sentenced Eric Labarge to more than three years in prison. The feds called Labarge the “ringleader” of a campaign to vandalize the homes of NHPR journalists and their families in retaliation for our reporting on Eric Spofford, the founder of Granite Recovery Centers.
