There’s so much our team of journalists accomplished in 2024! We covered state and general elections, gathered for a total solar eclipse, showcased art and culture in our community, produced nationally-recognized podcasts, and held events that sparked important conversations. We’ll be heading into a new year soon, but something that won’t change is our commitment to providing local news that matters to you and your neighbors. If you donate before 2024 ends (https://bit.ly/41oWBB3), your gift will be matched $2:$1. This means your impact on NHPR will TRIPLE INSTANTLY thanks to a group of Leadership Circle donors, including Tate and Amelia from Concord, Nancy and John from Hanover, and Ellie and Betsy from Randolph.

Since 2017, at least two men with serious mental illness have died while in New Hampshire state custody — after being restrained by correctional officers. In one case, the state is charging one of its own with homicide. But in another, the state denies any wrongdoing. Advocates say these incidents highlight fundamental problems with how New Hampshire cares for people in custody, and responds when they’re in crisis.
They needed psychiatric care. Instead, they died after confrontations with NH corrections officers.

NHPR’s “The 13th Step” podcast – finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in audio reporting and winner of the duPont-Colombia Award – is back with an update: A federal judge has sentenced Eric Labarge to more than three years in prison. The feds called Labarge the “ringleader” of a campaign to vandalize the homes of NHPR journalists and their families in retaliation for our reporting on Eric Spofford, the founder of Granite Recovery Centers. In a new episode, host Lauren Chooljian explains what went down in the courtroom – and how she navigated the experience as both a journalist and a victim of this crime.
