Earlier this month, Brownfields practitioners from around Montana and the country came together at the historic Ming Theater in downtown Helena to network, share resources, and collaborate on their collective effort to revitalize abandoned and underutilized properties in order to reactivate spaces, enhance aesthetics, and improve their communities. A huge THANK YOU to the folks from KSU TAB - Technical Assistance to Brownfields, EPA Region 8, US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and all the speakers at this days-long event for the opportunity.

As part of the EPA’s Thriving Communities Grantmaking program, the Mountains and Plains Environmental Justice (MAP EJ) Grants Hub (administered by JSI) is distributing $40 million in subgrants across Region 8! Subgrants range from $150,000 - $350,000, with a limited number of $75,000 subgrants for capacity-constrained organizations, for projects addressing environmental health and justice issues. Nonprofits, local municipalities, and institutes of higher education serving under-resourced communities are encouraged to apply. This week Meghan Guevara and I hit the road to Montana to spread the word about the MAP EJ Grants Hub! We started at the 2024 Montana Brownfields Workshop, hosted by KSU TAB - Technical Assistance to Brownfields and the Montana Department of Environmental Quality. The event was held at the historic Ming Theater in Helena, where Brownfields funds are being used to address environmental hazards and contribute to economic revitalization. We also had the opportunity to connect with our community partners from the Montana Watershed Coordination Council and Montana Association of Conservation Districts (MACD) at the MACD Annual Convention. So grateful for these partnerships and the opportunity to learn about climate-related issues that communities across Montana face. This fall, Jennifer passed the sanitarian exam to receive her registered sanitarian credential. According to the National Environmental Health Association, "Professionals who hold this credential demonstrate competency in an impressive range of environmental health topics including vector control, water quality, hazardous materials, air quality, built environment, direct and train personnel to respond to routine or emergency environmental situations, and provide education to their communities." Jennifer is a "knowledge sponge" that embodies DEQ values. Congratulations!

Congratulations to the DEQ Clark Fork River Remediation Team consisting of Jessica Banaszak, Logan Dudding, Katherine Garcin-Forba, Kevin Stone, Jessica Wilkerson, and Nolan Lister as well as individual awardees Daniel Norris, Whitney Bausch, and Sandy Moisey Scherer.

#EmployeeShoutOut 🏆 Wayne Jepson is known for doing his job really well. In Zortman, where the Zortman-Landusky Mine operations and Pegasus Gold bankruptcy left behind the need for ongoing water treatment, Wayne regularly focuses his efforts on community education and outreach in his role as an environmental scientist for DEQ. With decades of experience under his belt, Wayne is a trusted source of information and ideas in DEQ’s oversight of the water treatment. At mining sites across the state, Wayne is regularly relied upon to explain complex topics to a variety of audiences in a meaningful and understandable way.

Hey, how's the fishing going? 🎣 It is World Water Quality Monitoring Day, so today we celebrate the people that have dedicated their life to this work! The water quality monitoring crew at DEQ sets off every summer to collect water quality samples to protect and improve rivers, streams, and lakes across the state. They collect data on nutrients, metals, and E. coli, and during the 2023 field season, the team collected nearly 7300 sample bottles! 🤯
