We exist to protect people from the devastation of uninsured and hit-and-run driving.

About us

MIB is a not-for-profit organisation founded in 1946 on the belief that no-one whose life had been changed by an uninsured driver should be left without the support they deserve. Today that has grown into a community of people and organisations tirelessly working to protect people from the devastation of uninsured and hit-and-run driving. We do it by compensating victims quickly, fairly and compassionately, and getting uninsured and hit-and-run drivers off our roads until it becomes a thing of the past. Our work and impact stretch further too. We manage services for the insurance industry and government to help keep costs down for UK motorists, and we manage the Insurance Fraud Bureau, which brings together insurers, partners and law-enforcement agencies in the fight against fraud.

  • It’s always one of the best celebrations in the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) calendar, our annual #Excellence #Awards, celebrating the incredible achievements of our staff in the last year.   And this year there was so much to celebrate, from company-wide achievements to individuals who have gone above and beyond – some for many, many years.   Some of our awards are nominated and voted for by staff. This year, we had a record 198 nominations, which made the shortlisting a very tough job!   The most prestigious CEO award went to Mark Armstrong ACII. We estimate that over his 27 years’ service, he has helped at least 2,000 people who have been the victim of an uninsured or hit and run driver with support of around £250m!   Well done to all the nominees and winners: Customer First Award: Sarah Cooper Think BIG Award: Sugitha P. Inspire Award: Lexi Rodriguez Goodness Award: Victoria F. SLG Award: Ross Pollock CEO Award: Mark Armstrong ACII

  • Sharon was walking to work when a speeding car slammed into her and drove off. She woke up in hospital with a broken arm, a broken leg, two broken collarbones, eight broken ribs, a fractured neck, a collapsed lung and a bleed on the brain. MIB exists to protect people from the devastation of uninsured and hit-and-run driving. We make roads safer by getting uninsured and hit-and-run drivers off our roads. And until that’s accomplished, we’re here to compensate victims, like Sharon, quickly, fairly and compassionately. Watch Sharon's full story https://ow.ly/B00o50UnGYz #DriveInsured

  • We are delighted to share that Harkamal Phagura CGMA ACMA will continue the great work he’s started as our interim Chief Financial Officer on a permanent basis. Congratulations Harky!     Harky leads our Finance, Legal, CoSec, Procurement and Facilities functions. In his relatively short time with us, he’s been instrumental in driving many improvements, including overseeing the completion of our new offices in London, improving the communication around the levy and beginning the financial planning for MIB's new five-year strategy. He brings a wealth of experience in both PLC and private equity environments centred around Financial Services, Insurance and Data Management sectors. Harky is also a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.    “I’m excited to continue being part of MIB and the vital work we do to give victims of uninsured and hit-and-run driving the support they need while working with insurers and the police to make our roads safer,” says Harky. “Alongside my MIB and industry colleagues, I look forward to carrying on the work we’ve started, ensuring we have the financial resilience, strategy and governance to thrive in a complex and changing world – and to continue delivering long-term value for our members.” #WeareMIB

  • Inspector Simon Hills leads a team of police officers at Hampshire and Thames Valley Police. He worked with MIB as part of a nationwide pilot to reduce uninsured driving. The idea that followed has evolved into the largest and most successful operation of its kind: Operation Tutelage. “The vast majority of drivers we stop for no insurance are law-abiding people who have made a mistake. That got us thinking: ‘What if we could give honest drivers a way to correct their mistakes? What if we could focus on targeting drivers who know they are uninsured and who don’t care how many times we contact them?’ “Using technology and other methods, we decided to write to the owners of cars we know are on the roads that were showing as uninsured. “The letter they receive makes clear that we are giving them an opportunity to get it sorted before they are stopped out on the road, or we move on to a fine and seizing their car. It also comes from their local police force, encouraging them to get in touch if they need further advice. “Researching people who didn’t comply also gave us a hotlist for our officers to target. We’ve since developed that into detailed intelligence on the most serious offenders.” “Without MIB, we would never have got the funding we needed. “Through its relationships with insurers and the police, MIB played a vital role in building the case for the operation as a way of reducing the human and financial impact of uninsured driving. “MIB has also succeeded in making sure Operation Tutelage and uninsured driving continue to be spoken about at ministerial level. “Together, I’m hugely proud of our progress in tackling this important issue.” Since 2020, Operation Tutelage has helped over 600,000 people correct their insurance status. In the first of this two-part series, Angus reflects on: ➡️ How the huge breadth of the work we do took him by surprise and continues to inspire him  ➡️ The importance of building relationships with key partner organisations abroad to support our vital, but often unknown, role in keeping people moving abroad ➡️ The amount of time he’s spent listening – to staff across all areas, key external stakeholders and partner organisations  ➡️ The day he ended up in the back of a police car 🚔 … for the right reasons! #DriveInsured #WeareMIB
