About us
We inspire, develop and drive leaders to solve the most critical challenges of our time. Founded in 1985 by John and Anne Welsh McNulty, our Foundation's values are informed by both families’ experiences as Irish immigrants welcomed by America and grounded in our belief in the value of education and the importance of opportunity. We believe in a few fundamental human desires: to live meaningful lives, to build better ones for our children, to have a stake in our futures and communities. We recognize the central role individual leadership plays in effecting change and enabling people to take control of their future and reach their potential. Our programs support individuals at different stages of their leadership journey, from elevating examples of high-impact leaders through the John P. McNulty Prize, and incubating leadership in students and individuals with great potential through our academic partnerships.

As 2024 comes to a close, we are celebrating the extraordinary achievements of #McNultyPrize Winner, Aisha Nyandoro. This year, Aisha was named in the TIME 100 list for her groundbreaking work empowering families through Magnolia Mother’s Trust and Springboard To Opportunities. Through Magnolia Mother’s Trust, Aisha has redefined what support for families can look like, leading the nation’s first guaranteed income program for low-income, Black mothers. By providing direct cash payments, she’s giving women the power to choose what’s best for their families. This recognition follows another significant milestone earlier this year—Aisha’s receipt of The Heinz Awards, which further underscores the impact of her leadership and vision. Congratulations, Aisha, on a truly transformative year.

McNulty Program for Leadership in Science and Mathematics at St. Joseph’s University, and Villanova University’s Anne Welsh McNulty Institute for Women’s Leadership demonstrate the transformative power of cultivating leadership and driving innovation.

Amplifying impact and building connections is a crucial part of how we support the #McNultyPrize winners. In 2024, we invested deeply in building visibility for breakthrough leaders to showcase their impact and share their insights with funders, practitioners, and communities across cultures. From convening panels at platforms like the Skoll Foundation World Forum, SOCAP Global & Aspen Ideas Festival to hosting intimate conversations with leaders like Dr. Vivek Murthy and Anna Deavere Smith, we celebrate this year of accelerating impact and growing the community of leaders we support.

For 70 years, Frank Capra’s holiday classic ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ has inspired us and shown us how neighbors can lift each other up. The kind of community-focused banks we see in the film are still shaping our world today. Bill Bynum’s Hope Credit Union provides financial services, leverages resources, and engages in advocacy that strengthens the financial health and wealth of people in under-resourced Deep South communities.
